"Tammy Duckworth Did Not Cut and Run, Mr. President"

Last week, in one of the lowest moments of his miserable presidency, George W. Bush accused the Democratic Party of becoming “the party of cut and run.” Tammy Duckworth, the Democrat running for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Illinois) who lost both her legs in when her helicopter took fire in Iraq, has an answer for the president:

“Well, I didn’t cut and run, Mr. President. Like so many others, I proudly fought and sacrificed, Duckworth said. “My helicopter was shot down long after you proclaimed ‘mission accomplished.”

And neither did the 60 or so other Democratic veterans running for Congress this year.

6. Hey, countmyvote4real, what's your agenda?
Just wondering. Why is Tammy inadequate/carpetbagger, and who the fuck are you?
Stand and be counted. :eyes: If you dare.

24. Two words: Christine Cegelis
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 12:27 AM by countmyvote4real
And what part of DLC/DCCC do you not get as it relates to progressives? And maybe you do get it because you are not a progressive AKA liberal. Anyway…

Christine was the only progressive candidate that actually lives in that district. Our war hero (not sarcasm) lives in the district next door. Cegelis was building on a previously popular grass roots campaign and was poised to get the Democratic nomination until Rahm Emanuel decided to draft and fund Duckworth as his DLC/DCCC poster candidate.

At that time, Duckworth was promoting “stay the course” in Iraq. I can well understand her rationale to justify why she left her limbs in Iraq, but I hope we all understand that it was not necessary for her or any of our troops to do so or to continue to lay down their lives or lose their limbs for a lie.

I don’t know her position now. I don’t really care because she is funded by “Republican Lite” dollars via the DCCC and that cannot be good for progressive causes. She is tainted and controlled by those contributions. I wish her well and hope that she will find her own progressive voice regardless of the agenda of her financial benefactors.

Yes, Duckworth lost limbs for a lie. And progressives have lost a truly principled candidate that won’t ever think of running for office again because she can no longer afford to launch a third campaign against the DLC machine.

Good grief. Have you not followed any of this on DU? I can’t search DU, but here are some other sources:

The electronic voting machines probably make any funding for either primary candidate in the GE mute. Peace. See you at GITMO.

and I have to tell you all that as much as I want Tammy Duckworth to win ..... the number of Roscum yard signs is OVERWHELMING here....they're like dandelions (if it were the right season for them)! I was commenting to my kids that I wondered if Repubs were stealing the Duckworth signs (like they did with our "Vote Kerry" lighted sign two years ago.....

on edit: Hmmmmm....perhaps I need to 'step back and breathe' for a moment....but maybe not

11. no shit. this dimwit made an appearance at my daughter's school
last year (in her american politics class) and they did a little q&a with the kids--she had to check with her aid on various things ("did i support that?" etc. and her aid would nod or answer her so she knew what answer to tell the class! even the republican kids thought she was STUPID)

i'm so glad she's running this ethics investigation on foley. NOT!

"Ethics Probe Committee Members

October 10, 2006

"The panel of the House ethics committee that is investigating the handling of complaints about former Rep. Mark Foley. Rep. Doc Hastings (R-Wash.), ethics committee chairman. As a lawmaker, Hastings has focused on constituent concerns: getting aid for Washington apple growers and federal cleanup money for the Hanford nuclear weapons reservation, which once produced two-thirds of the nation's plutonium.

"Rep. Howard L. Berman of Valley Village, Calif., senior Democrat on the ethics committee. Berman, who is in his 12th term representing the San Fernando Valley, has a reputation as an intelligent and judicious negotiator.

"Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio). A former judge and county prosecutor from Cleveland, Jones is only Ohio's second black member of Congress in history. An outspoken partisan, she was among the few to vote against a House resolution in 2003 supporting U.S. troops because it linked the Sept. 11 attacks to the war in Iraq.

"Rep. Judy Biggert (R-Ill.). Elected to the House in 1998, Biggert has worked on several children's issues. She has been part of the moderate GOP Tuesday Group but is conservative on many issues. She voted against creation of the Sept. 11 commission and helped craft the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act.

13. I just drove thru her district too, I saw no signs of hers.
As much as I admire her for her ability to stand tall, even in a wheelchair, I think that her close ties to Rahm turned off many potential voters.

Remember, for many middle of the roaders in this blue state, Rahm is disliked more than liked. Had she been able to distance herself more from him, I think her chances would be better.

23. Can you imagine what the bushits
are thinking about Tammy Duckworth's winning and being snapped by DC photographers as a frequent reminder of what all bushit's war has wrought?

I would think they would certainly have the big guns out against her.

18. why doesn't she take up the words of Max Cleland:
Mr. President, you, unlike Max Cleland didn't cut and run from Vietnam. I wasn't AWOL from my duties as a soldier. I didn't leave my post. Where were YOU in 72, Mr. President?

Why don't you have Bruce Bartlett release ALL of your National Guard documents? I've released ALL of my service records

25. Tammy Got A Major Endorsement...And A Problem...
The Daily Hearld endorsement is worth 1,000,000 yard signs and Tammy got it. The story is here:

http://www.dailyherald.com/search/searchstory.asp?id=238809

They also endorsed Melissa Bean for re-election as well as Hastert (with an admonishment...worth a read) and Biggert.

The problem is Tammy's running out of money. Looks like Rahm hasn't been bringing in those brinks trucks like he promised.

Here's from yesterday's Hearld...

Supporters of 6th Congressional District Democrat Tammy Duckworth were left scratching their heads Monday at campaign finance reports that showed her with $206,000 left for the race’s stretch run.

Word of Duckworth’s relatively empty coffers comes as her campaign stopped running TV ads and as her Republican opponent, Peter Roskam, is up with a TV spot attacking her on illegal immigration.

For Duckworth backers who might fear the campaign peaked too early, the response coming from her spokeswoman Monday wasn’t too encouraging. Spokeswoman Christine Glunz said she didn’t know how much money Duckworth has raised since Sept. 30 and didn’t know when Duckworth would begin airing TV ads again.

By contrast, Wheaton’s Roskam had $1.5 million to start October, although he’s dipped into that for his TV ad blitz.

I'm on the northern edge of the district and the local cable is non-stop Roskum and Sweeney spots. Last week I drove through Naperville, Wheaton and points north...right through the heart of the district and I saw only a handful of Duckworth signs...and, yes, tons of Roskum's. When I got home, I sent another $100 to her campaign...hopefully for yard signs. Looks like I'll ante up again and hope others do as well.

A week or so ago, there were people hopping around here about making a big push for John Laesech in Hastert's district, and while that would be the sweetest of sweet victories, I was concerned about the money and resources available for the two REAL hot races in the area. Hastert built a campaign complex right in Oakbrook and his people are running all these campaigns. I expect we'll see another $500k dump within the week for more TV time.

I don't think the Tribune or Sun-Times have come out with endoresments yet...but those could be the ones that make or break this racee.
