McGavick seeks panel to advise president on Iraq war
By Alex Fryer

Contending that it is "clear conditions are worsening in Iraq," Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike McGavick called Monday for the creation of a bipartisan congressional committee to study the problem and offer advice to President Bush.

McGavick, a former insurance executive who is challenging Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell, said Congress needs to increase its oversight of the war and reiterated his call for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign.

Creating a greater role for national lawmakers would send a message to the White House, McGavick said in a news conference.

"I think it's important to do this in order to get the president's attention," he said. "Frankly, I think the American people feel, when it comes to Iraq, the president can be somewhat bullheaded and not openly listening to all the various ideas for re-direction."

<snip>

In August, McGavick sounded optimistic about the war, saying, "If you look at most of Iraq, so much of it is functioning. You're down to hotspots, and you should continue to do what you can to contain those places."

1. If only there were a council that looked after, say, national security...
While I won't argue that one fix for putting a child in the White House is to send a babysitter along to make sure he doesn't start pointless unwinnable wars, I have to wonder if Mr McGavick has ever heard of a thing called the Constitution and its plans for something we call "congressional oversight."

What a maroon.

2. what does he think is the role of the Joint Chiefs of Staff?
A panel of experts in their fields, joined by civilian experts.

Does Mike McGavick think that members of this incredibly inept congress should advise the president about Iraq?

What about suggesting an oversight committee, maybe even a joint committee between both houses? Naw, that would never do.

Mike McGavick sucks and so do his commercials.

(Cantwell's commercials are boring and benign, but not stoopid!) :silly:

4. Are Cantwell's commercials only airing in big markets?
I'm in central WA and have yet to see a commercial for Cantwell. Are they just playing in the big markets of the Westside and maybe Spokane?

6. I guess so. They're on here daily, even on prime time.
They usually accompany each other for balance, but they're about even for airplay. I'm in downtown Seattle. Where are you?

There's another set of commercials by the RNC and DNC that are both negative. They're both unpleasant, but necessary rebuttal.

Cantwell's commercials include her speaking from home and from work.
McG commercials are more modern. Screen is white, he walks out full body, talks to you as words type around him. He uses the first person and says, "stick around. there's more to come..." It's more gimmicky.

7. Too little, too late...and a cynical political maneuver at that
Go to hell, McGavick, and take the rest of the "compassionate" Repug Congress with you. The last thing the Iraqis and our troops need after 3 1/2 years is for you do-nothings to suddenly take interest in their fates just to win votes.
