FDA ready to back marketing of food from cloned animals
Agency points to new data showing milk, meat are safe for consumption

By RICK WEISS
Washington Post

WASHINGTON - Three years after the Food and Drug Administration first hinted that it might permit the sale of milk and meat from cloned animals, prompting public reactions that ranged from curiosity to disgust, the agency is poised to endorse marketing of the mass-produced animals for public consumption.

The decision, expected by the end of this year, is based largely on new data indicating that milk and meat from cloned livestock and their offspring pose no unique risks to consumers.

"Our evaluation is that the food from cloned animals is as safe as the food we eat every day," said Stephen F. Sundlof, the FDA's chief of veterinary medicine, who has overseen the long-stalled risk assessment.

1. And many life saving anti-biotics and other drugs.
I have no problem with a cloned animal for milk or other products, so long as the cloning is done carefully and so long as they maintain adequate genetic banks to prevent loss of strains that might be even more useful in the future.

3. "the public will reject Dolly-the-Lamb chops and clonal cream"
They got that right...at least where this member of the public is concerned. I will opt to eat less meat and dairy before I choose to eat Frankenmeat.

7. Gross
I can't believe that cloning is cheaper than letting nature take its course the old fashioned way.

Eventually, the millionaires are going to want mini-me's for themselves. The ultimate vanity product. How long before there are NEW Dubya clones?

11. Rather than curtail your diet,
Instead, get to know your local farmers and local farmers' market. If you live in a town of any size at all, there's bound to be a farmers' market on a regular basis. Patronize it, the food is organic, non-cloned, non GM, and much tastier and healthier for you. If you live in a rural area, get to know your farming neighbors. Most will be will to work out a deal and sell you sides of meat for quite cheap. Another option is to join a CSA.

Face it, corporate America is going to continue to feed us shit(literally) until it becomes unprofitable to do so. Therefore the most effective way to combat this encroachment of franenfoods is to vote with our wallet. Besides, not only does supporting your local farmer benefit you nutritionally, it benefits the farmer, your local community, and the earth in general, since less gas is used to bring the food to market.

10. I'm waiting for the day they don't even have to clone the whole animal...
They will just clone the pork chops, the leg of lamb or that tasty rib roast.

Once they get that down, then you will see cloned protein in a tube. No more bones!
