Fear of tyranny sweeping America....

This was on the After Downing Street site today. Interesting (and sadly true) piece:

Fear of Tyranny Sweeping America
Submitted by davidswanson on Tue, 2006-10-17 03:36. Media
By Sherwood Ross

Fear for their own personal security, so typical of a nation whose leaders are grasping for absolute power, has begun to grip broad segments of the American people.

In church this past Sunday one man spoke up during the “concerns” portion of the service, beginning, “When the arrests begin I will probably be the first one picked up.”

He then went on to tell of a woman he knew recently released from a mental institution in Texas where, he said, the Federal government had locked her up for a year after she tried to show officials “proof” Iraq’s Saddam Hussein had no WMD.

I found this anecdote incredible until I recalled a recent reliable press account of a man arrested by the Secret Service merely for politely telling Vice President Cheney at a public appearance he disagreed with his policies.

Whether the story of the woman tossed into an asylum is factual, there are growing numbers of people who fear retribution for exercising their right of free speech. People warn their friends: Better not say that in public. Better not put that in writing.

After hearing the story of the woman’s arrest, a second congregation member stood up to warn dictatorships commit their dark deeds out of sight of the general public. He told of growing up in Argentina under the junta, oblivious to the fact the torture barracks was within a blocks of his home. Life, he said, went on normally even as people were murdered, and he prayed America would not suffer a like fate.

After the service, which was apolitical, still another church-goer circulated a petition opposing the Military Commissions Act, the one depriving arrested captives, according to Amnesty International, of “any opportunity for meaningful judicial review.” .........

3. This is not your father's America
The Dicktator's new ominous-sounding "Military Commissions Act" which was recently rubber-stamped by a conspiratorial congress, has changed the rules.
Any of us can now be spirited away for speaking against the government. That would seem to include many on this board. Sadly, it may be a matter of time. Fortunately, the psychotic A.G. is perhaps too preoccupied with more salicious matters at this time.
Good read from Ted Rall in his column of 10/10/06:

17. Republicans didn't run on "the tyranny ticket".
Voters didn't know.

But more and more, they know now.

23. Important point...
Its true, and it reminds us that we are the majority, these actions they have taken are hidden from the American people because they are against our wills, conservative and liberals alike.

You can't control a nation if the people have too many freedoms.

Thanks for the article, recommended.

13. Basically
it means we are all most likely on a list somewhere and based upon our level of comments on this message board we are probably rated based upon threat level.

Packing my things and off to the country, hehe.

25. I've been on "the list" for decades
Started with me being followed by the FBI back in the late 80's when I was involved with some pretty radical folks. We were harboring a couple of runaways (including a girl who was being raped by her mother's boyfriend. The mother and the cops refused to believe her). The FBI had fvked up by breaking into the wrong house looking for the kids. This made them stop short of invading our home for the kids because they couldn't afford to get it wrong twice (the 1st time was covered by two local TV stations).

For the next month the FBI had our house staked out and I was followed everywhere I went. They never did bust us, and we eventually not only got the rape victim into a safe house, but got her reconciled with her mother and the rapist arrested.

Viva la revolution.

22. Its here.... My family is being arrested for coming home at 1:10
in the morning. Subjected to over three hours of drug testing, three breath test. We live in Sennsenbrenner's district, and we have a Kennedy sticker on the car. Nothing showed up on the three breath tests, so they decided to do a blood draw.

24. fear of tyranny?
That is what is supposed to happened pre-tyranny. All of the alarmists were ignored and ridiculed by the majority. They are still being ignored. After the money collapse, after the pensions are swiped, that is when they will ignore no more.

The contract between the people and government. The agreement that they can have power as long as they follow the conditions set forth in the contract has already been breached. Tyranny is already here...why don't people get that?

Most have no idea what's in store.

If we're on the "other side" politically, we're with the "enemy".
