Demeaning Al Gore's Conviction
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 08:58 AM by RestoreGore
General comments on my observations regarding Mr.Gore's movie and where it has led the dialogue in many places on the Internet.

I have read some articles and opinions written of late wherein the writers of those articles are intimating that Al Gore wrote his book An Inconvenient Truth and made this most important movie for our times as just a springboard to run for President again. I say, how dare you.

How dare you try to demean the sincere efforts of a man who had the environment in his heart long before he ever entered the political world, especially when his movie is based on facts that have been corroborated by a scientific community which has literally been gagged for all of these years regarding this issue.

Mr. Gore is the missive for a community of good people who have been trying to bring this inconvenient truth to the people while having enormous pressure brought to bear against them by corporate special interests and their political backers. And it needs to be brought forward to the people now, because it is real, and it is happening now.

I sincerely am beginning to think that those who incessantly talk only about his running for President even though they know this system is toxic and tomfoolery as Mr. Gore himself has stated many times as recently as last week in Paris, are simply doing so either because they cannot face their own complicity in this crisis, or they simply want to divert attention from this issue to focus on something they can use against Mr. Gore by skewing his intentions.

Anyone who has seen An Inconvenient Truth can tell you that there was no political pretense whatsoever involved in it. It was Al Gore's way of relaying to those of us who were part of a system that let our loved ones down before that we cannot allow that to happen again regarding this crisis, because this crisis is for keeps. It is actually because of the treatment this issue and he got in that political world in the past that this message even has to be brought out to the people now. Had those in the political world done their job the last thirty years and put the fate of this planet and best interests of the people of this country first, that inconvenient truth could have been avoided.

So my message to those in general who have nothing better to do now than speculate, cheerlead only out of a selfish political motive, intimate, and basically attempt to take the focus off of this issue and the work we all need to do to mitigate this crisis now, is that you are also accomplices to helping that ten year window close.

I am an environmentalist who has been vocal about this for years. I have walked miles to hand out flyers for An Inconvenient Truth, and to also tell people how to reduce their carbon footprint. I live my life according to those ten steps. I have supported Al Gore's endeavors on this without any political motivation. I have applied to go to Nashville to learn his slideshow and am willing to overcome my fears to deliver it myself even though my finances are not what they could be now, because I believe it must be done now. I have written about and promoted his movie incessantly because I sincerely believe in his message and see the urgency and truth in it that we must see in order to now take action ourselves, and I am not the only one.

And I have met the man in person and seen in his eyes a commitment to this issue that has prompted me to seek a new position in the UN that would facilitate him being able to continue to devote his time to this issue alone globally because I see his dedication to it and believe he could accomplish great things for the world, the prize we should all have on eyes on.

To be made to think that I and millions all over this world are only unwitting pawns in a grand scheme for him to really run for President in a system that is "toxic" by using this issue is totally unfair to the character of the man himself, the issue at hand, and to all of those people like myself who are working with him now on this issue because we care.

I support him and I support working on this issue and will continue to do so. However, I don't support having the trust of people betrayed by political operatives with selfish motives who think the ends justify the means. And in closing I say, if you claim to support this man and can't see that conviction in his eyes and haven't been moved to actions beyond just the usual political cheerleading, you don't really support him and what is truly important to him, you support a Party agenda over all else and that doesn't help this cause in the end, for this is not a partisan political issue.

The fate of our planet and our continued sustainability is the most important issue we have to face now. It is going to take a greater presence than any President of any one nation to take it on, and we have that in Al Gore, and in us working together on this with him now. So sad that instead of embracing that so many wish to waste time on petty political speculation when the science proves daily that we are responsible for altering the relationship we have with this planet, and if we don't take action now it will forever alter the ecosystems that sustain us. That is not a political soundbite, that is reality. I sincerely think some need a big dose of it right about now.

1. For all my criticism of Gore reClinton yrs, I completely AGREE with you on
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 09:02 AM by blm
this.

Those who claim he's only doing what he's doing as a political maneuver are feeding a stereotype created by the media that Gore "would do anything to win" - completely ignoring his 35 year commitment to environmental issues.

In fact, had Gore been president INSTEAD of Clinton, we would have seen his powerpoint presentation TEN YEARS AGO and be hard at work as a nation correcting course.

It is pure ignorance to accuse Gore or Kerry of only stepping forward now, when their actual careers show that they have been where they are at for a long time - but it was media and many in the public who FAILED TO NOTICE.

2. I totally agree - The political buzz is counterproductive.
The focus should be on the content of his movie, so that, whether he runs or not, global climate change becomes a major issue in the next race.

This issue is as important as Iraq or terrorism, actually more important IMHO. We need to act now, before it is too late, for the future generations, and the time window is small.

4. I hope he did do it as a political maneuver . . .
. . . but I'm also sure that his conviction on this issue is strong. He's hardly a 'Johnny-come-lately" to environmentalism.

I would like to see him run. He could become one of the great statesmen of our time.

5. Could become?
he already is the greatest statesman of our time, even BETTER than Bill Clinton, and that is the point. And he doesn't need to be in the beltway cesspool to do the work that needs to be done on this issue. As a matter of fact, that would take the focus off of the climate crisis, and that is not what this planet needs right now. IMO, the American people also had their chance to have him and they blew it... but he is still out here as a private citizen bringing this message of warning and hope. To me that already tells me what a great man he is.

6. I am split on this
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 11:30 AM by Uncle Joe
I want him to be President, I have not given up on our nation in spite of us blowing it in 2000. Al empowered us all when he championed the internet only to be trashed by the mass corporate media for his efforts, and I view him as our modern day Prometheus. I want Al to be our national redeemer to keep us out of the out house of history. That is of course my selfish side wants.

My higher self believes as you that the issue of climate change is too critical to human survival to be politicized, this is balanced by an appreciation for what a President can do regarding changing our suicidal environmental policy. I also believe Al has always been totally sincere in all his beliefs regarding the issues that effect humanity and has been the preeminent leader on the environment long before it was considered politically expedient to do so.

I understand what Al is saying when he says the process is toxic, it has been poisoned by the web of lies spun by our fourth estate, and their monopoly on information regarding our potential candidates qualifications and positions on the issues that affect the American People. This is why if you don't pay exorbitant amounts of money for their 30 second sound bite commercials, the truth doesn't get out. Untangling the truth will be a long arduous process.

Al Gore will always be my President and I will support whatever decision he makes, whether he runs for President, is drafted, appointed by the Supreme Court (long shot possibility) in a fit of contrition, or if he decides to never enter politics again.

Kicked and recommended

7. Yes, he already is Presidential
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 11:51 AM by RestoreGore
And I can tell you that the night I met him and shook his hand I saw how larger than life he is and how truly fulfilled doing this makes him. I frankly believe he should be allowed to continue doing and must continue doing this not only because it is a fulfilling effort for him personally, but because considerirng what we face if we do not heed the warnings, I see him as the only one who can inspire people on a global scale to take action. Especially considering how much time he has already given to a beltway that truly did not appreciate his intelligence, his vision, and his conviction on this issue.

11. The beltway ALWAYS has to lie about its most sincere participants. That is
their way of distracting from the greater message that participant is making, thereby protecting themselves and their own powerbase.

12. the wingnuts mock that which they don't understand
Their anti-intellectualism colors much of their caustic response to those working on behalf of those in need (Clinton) and on behalf of the planet (Gore).

Environmentalism has become a dirty word along with civil rights and worker's rights. It's astounding that the Republicans continue to be able to bamboozle people to vote against their own interests. These would be easy arguments to counter if the Democrats set their collective minds to it.

13. I agree
And that has baffled me as well. I could never understand how you can be poor in this country and vote Republican, but of course their politics of fear psychologically trumps all of the other important issues... it is truly evil to me, and they should not be allowed to get away with it.

15. No one can "make the most important movie."
Everybody TRIES to make the most important movie they can. But no one can do that alone. That judgment is in the hands of the people who buy the tickets, and to a smaller extent the critics.

Simply the fact that a lot of people have chosen to see the movie, and respect Gore for what he has done, is an indication that something is going on. Something that the neocons can't effectively spin into insignificance.

16. Thanks for your post.
Gore is more than the movie, more than the 2000 election. He has made it his life mission to focus on the environment and how we can turn this around.

Would vote for him in a heartbeat if he were to run.

17. I completely agree with you abou this sincerity.
He has been involved with this issue for a long time and for whatever reason only now is the message really starting to be heard, and his book and movie are doing a LOT for that. And it is for that reason that I wish he would at least consider running (although, for all of the reasons that YOU state, I can understand why he would not want to). I think that although you are correct taht the problem is beyond all nations, the fact is that we in the US are a HUGE part of the problem. And like it or not, we are a nation that needs leaders, that is shaped by our president and by a top-down sort of national presence. That is why I would like to see him run. Because we need a person of such caliber and greatness.

I have a button that has a picture of Mr. Gore and the planet, and it says "For Earth's Sake - Al Gore 2008" and to me that says it all right there.

18. With a truly Democratic system...
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 12:50 PM by RestoreGore
Where media and the Congress were not in the pockets of the corporate/military complex and govt. cronies that pick and choose what news is disseminated to the public to disinform and proselytize, and where their aspirations come first over the needs of our people...Where politics was not a popularity contest where looks and words, and the "having a beer" mentality wasn't so prevalent over seeking leaders of conscience and morals... Where votes (paper ballots, no machines) were counted fairly and where the people have been given a sense of their true responsibility in keeping the dialogue of reason over the politics of fear and distraction...Where issues discussed in sincerity are the norm instead of the mudslinging tactics of personal character assasination...And in a country where the people as a whole truly appreciated the vision, intelligence, and sincerity of a man like Al Gore, I would work my heart and soul out for him to be where he should have been six years ago. I and some others tried in 2004, but to no avail, because that is not the way this system is today, and until it is, it isn't good enough to me for this good man.

Believe me, I have cried many tears in thinking about what we lost when we allowed 2000 to slip through our fingers... However, Al Gore is a man who is very wise and prescient, and he now sees an opportunity to break free of all of that and the system that allowed it to happen and to do something that in essence can not only bring America to the forefront in facing this crisis at last, but bringing the world on board first in order to exert the pressure necessary that will leave politicians in this country with no other choice. They will either lead or be left behind. That is the great work Mr. Gore is now doing by traveling the world regarding this issue, and why he is my Global Environmental Ambassador. I believe he can, has, and will do great things whether he is ever President or not.

Does it hurt to look back? Yes it does, which is why I finally see what Mr. Gore was speaking of in looking to the future, and in stating that in losing it tends to shake the soul and let the glory out (especially when you win and it is taken from you.) This is Al Gore's glory coming out, and it may well be what wakes the world to preserving its future. There is no more important accomplishment to me than that title or not, and we should not let this slip through our fingers nor diminish the weight of his conviction, but join him in it.
