Where were you when America officially legalized torture?
I'd been running errands all morning so I could be back home (here in Germany) in time for the signing. I wanted to see him sign it. I had to witness him signing it. I refused to run from it. America was about to legalize torture and I wanted to feel every second of that moment.

I will never forget this day.

3. This will go down in history as one of America's darkest moments.
It will rank right up there with the attacks on Pearl Harbor, and 9/11.

Bush will be delegated to history as the worst President ever, bar none. And this will be his crowning glory, the failed attempt to do away with the Constitution.

maybe that's what a lot of people count on...this is just one more shame in a history of shameful acts...maybe many in government think people will "just get over this" too.

when I see what is happening in Iraq everyday
as I watched the US stand by as much of Lebanon was destroyed by USA made weapons..

I'm not sure if "shame" can even describe the horror of helplessly watching these things.

26. I do know we are not COMPLETELY helpless
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 10:10 AM by G_j
you and I and so many others try like hell to make a difference.
It is just that they go ahead and do what they do regardless.

I would love so to see 50 million Americans or more partake in a tax revolt and really cut the purse strings. There are many things people might do if they had the will.
Knowing that will not happen adds to the helplessness.
The fact is, Americans COULD do something to change the equation.

31. They could indeed. And you're right - that adds to it
that's completely part of my helplessness...that action could be taken....if only people would.

But people have to feel directly affected first...and many don't...many refuse to see it. Many are scared.

13. I'm a coffee nut myself..and truly...you need more than one cup
for such an event...though not even a whole pot would help.

Sorta ruins the flavor - and coffee is one of those small pleasures....and that's what Bush is ruining in addition to other things...the small pleasures.

We can't let him do that.

Every person in that picture.

Take down those names and put them beside the names of Benedict Arnold, Joe McCarthy, Richard Nixon, and John Wilkes Booth.

They are America's shame.

23. I was crying, and thinking of Thomas Jefferson;
"The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then."
Thomas Jefferson, letter to Abigail Adams, 1787

How shameful that today even Thomas Jefferson would be considered an "enemy combatant" by these bastards. What a sad day, but one that will only empower me to exercise my freedoms even more, and no matter where the chips may fall, I stand with Thomas Jefferson and his words.

RIP America July 4, 1776 - October 17, 2006. 230 years of representative democracy done away with a stroke of a pen.

I have always said there were only two people in the world that I hoped would literally die screaming in pain, Margaret Thatcher and my late brother's second wife. Now I'll add George Walker Bush to the list. I hope he and everyone that voted for this travesty literally rot....

I am so ashamed to call myself an American right now.

49. Standing in the shower while closing my eyes and trying to breathe
When I woke up this morning, I knew what was going to be taking place soon. I got in the shower and at the moment I believe he was signing it and spewing his garbage from his mouth about how it was being done in the memory of the 9/11 victims, I closed my eyes and tried to breathe, realizing that a shift had just taken place in the Universe and that our country, our world was about to be taken in a new direction and some very ugly things were coming.

It was also on this day 17 years ago that I went through the Loma Prieta Earthquake here in San Francisco....I think that what Bush just did will shake the foundation of this country far worse than the 6.9 that hit San Francisco in 1989.

I too will never forget this day. :puke:  :puke:
