Collierville [TN] developer sues over letter to the editor
Stay-at-home mom files countersuit on Halle

A prominent Collierville developer has filed a $10 million defamation suit against a woman who wrote a letter to the editor opposing his proposed subdivision.

She filed a free-speech response Tuesday that includes a $200,000 countersuit, and friends and neighbors have established a defense fund for her.

1. But big businesses *hate* frivolous lawsuits, don't they?
Ahhhh, the "frivolous lawsuit" that Republicans won't or can't oppose -- the ones that businesses file on individuals to suppress free speech or competitors to run them out of business.

I's like to nominate David Halle for the upcoming Top 10 Conservative Idiots list.

2. Good for her. Good to hear friends & neighbors stand with her
The rich and greedy need copies of the Bill of Rights shoved down their throats - forcefully.

5. Amen to that!
The developers here have about every government in the Memphis area in their back pockets. They know their days are numbered when people start standing up against them, and that's why they're filing frivolous SLAPP lawsuits like this.

3. What a SLAPP!
Common corporate tactic: "Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation".

There's no provision for public defenders in civil court, so most often the corporations accomplish their goal of stifling opposition. Especially common as a pre-emptive measure against environmental groups.

4. As a former reporter in Tennessee... I'm surprised he found
an attorney that would take this piece-of-crap case.

Hopefully, the letter-writer will kick his fucking ass.
