16 Protesters Arrested Near White House
Associated Press
Tuesday, October 17, 2006; 11:32 AM

Protesters opposed to provisions in an anti-terrorism bill signed into law by President Bush have been arrested near the White House.

A spokesman for the U.S. Park Police said 16 people were taken into custody on the White House sidewalk around 10:30 a.m. Lt. Scott Fear said the demonstrators have been charged with impeding access to a White House entrance.

The demonstrators represented a coalition of religious groups. Many of those arrested had been shouting out "Bush is the terrorist," and "Torture is a crime."

3. Jeez....where are the COLLEGE kids???
I hate to say it, but those look like faces from the NIXON era. The youth of this country seem to be AWOL in this matter...could this be a selective representation, or is my assessment that their are no youngsters there correct?

Hey, ya get the government you deserve, but damn, if pictures don't lie, they're not holding up their end.

7. They are ill informed - they don't see it as anything to care about
or they are "goal oriented" - god forbid they screw up their resumes.

When I was young, the news was full of the coverage of VietNam, body bags and fighting.

Now, nothing and too many distractions that keep a majority of the young from knowing what is going on and from really caring - no draft, they ain't affected.

38. That's bullshit. You can participate, yet move when the cop tells you to
Arrest isn't a mandatory feature of these exercises. At least not back in the day when people actually showed up for these things.

You keep moving, you don't block the sidewalk, yet you provide CRITICAL MASS which makes the exercise worth covering by the media. And by media, I am talking about video cameras and television reporters, something beyond a few photographers shooting stills.

Jeez, back in the day, there were groups of people who were the designated sacrificial lambs, who would block and get arrested, while others just provided support, milled about, created a bit of controlled chaos and enjoyed the cameraderie. There were too many for the cops to arrest them all.

Guess MTV and XBox keeps the youngsters chained indoors nowadays.

I have to put it down to laziness and a sense that they won't be affected. Which is sort of the way Dick Cheney felt about it, with his five deferments....

30. We have raised a generation that doesn't know what their rights are.
Beginning in the eighties, with the "War on Drugs", we started seeing random locker searches. During the nineties, we began installing metal detectors in schools. Now, schools are in many ways more like prisons than like schools.

Over the past 20 years, students have been conditioned to accept that authority can do whatever they want, and that individuals have no rights.

Why are we surprised that they aren't protesting this?

Reap what ye sow, America.

34. But they do know how to download their favorite MTV videos!
I don't want to believe that the next generations are a bunch of useless sheep, but they aren't convincing me yet.

Hell, my generation was jerky in some respects (the "Don't trust anyone over thirty" business was childish, ageist, and just plain ignorant, IMO) but there was an iota of PASSION about them, even if they executed a bit stupidly in some respects.

I guess these pampered kids don't feel like they need to CHANGE THE WORLD...

And right now, the world is a shitty diaper, and it BADLY needs changing!

36. I WAS one of those 60's college kids. It's called "The Draft".
Among other things. Studies have shown that "My G-g-g-generation" chose majors more socially progressive, for one. For another, it was an entirely different milieu, where Youth Culture ruled, so we thought we could actually make a difference.

37. You're not the only one!! And I agree the draft was a helluva motivator
But demonstrations happened well BEFORE the draft took hold as well. The SDS was all over the place raising hell and riling the locals before the lottery ever happened. They were instrumental among others in organizing that huge march on the Pentagon in 67. By the time the lottery came along, though, they were deflating and other organizations, like VVAW were taking hold of the agenda.

The lottery was an early Christmas present (do I need to use that :sarcasm: icon?) in 1969, with the first inductees off to the races in 70. Great history here: http://www.landscaper.net/draft.htm#Sept.%2014%20'Wins'%20Draft%20Lottery

21. I love how they say it was religious groups, but don't say which ones.
Because if they had to list it was Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodists, and Lutherans, it might make people think these were the opinions of the mainstream. No, better to make them seem anonymous so people can completely not identify with them (at best) or assume they're religious wackos like Phelps or Koresh (at worst.)
