It's time for a new Woodstock.

And I'm not talking about that wussified, fake, glued-together-for-profit imitation they held a few years back. I'm talking about what came to be because of the original 1969 concept. I'm talking about Yasgur's Farm.

We need a protest.

We need protest songs. We need protest singers. We need protesters by the millions!

We need CSN & Y. We need Carlos Santana. We need Kenny Loggins. We need Joan Baez. We need John Fogerty. We need Arlo Guthrie. We need Melanie. We need to reinvoke the voice of protests past- men and women who are willing and able to come together once again and show this wasted generation how it's done, dammit.

We need anger. We need desire. We need people who know the truth and know how to sing about it. We need a mass of people so large it will shut down the state. (And I'm living in Texas, so that will take a LOT of people!)

We need to get a whole bunch of men, women, and children in one place, so when we all cry out "ENOUGH!!!" at the top of our collective voice it will be heard.

We need Max Yazgur and his 600 acre farm.

But I've been to Arlo Gutherie concerts, and I've heard old peace movement hands talk about the current war, and you know what? It always either turns to pessimism (the country's not going to survive this), self-congradulation (we ended the vietnam war, goddammit, go us!), or condemnation (kids today don't care, and don't know shit).

And to be totally honest, I don't think that breakfast in bed for 40,000 on a farm in Texas would do any good. Maybe a simultaneous mid-afternoon smokebreak for 75,000 in DC, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and LA would. Or maybe a general strike, but good luck with that.

You'll never get 50 Cent or Britney to talk about anything else with their lyrics other than the vapid, insipid, insubstantial nothings that constitute the entirety of their thoughts, and consequently, the thoughts of every teenager and young adult that listens to their schlock with devotion. The days of the meritocracy of music are over, replaced by the insidious "give the people what they want" marketing scheme that foists meaningless drivel on unsuspecting radio listeners by campaigning for boy bands over hard-working, blue-collar rock and roll bands. American Idol is going to beat out the best band east of the Mississippi (that you've never heard of) every time, and you can bet that that dizzy no-talent is not going to waste his or her time promoting political causes.
