"What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000."
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 07:50 PM by Prisoner_Number_Six
It's time for a new Woodstock.

And I'm not talking about that wussified, fake, glued-together-for-profit imitation they held a few years back. I'm talking about what came to be because of the original 1969 concept. I'm talking about Yasgur's Farm.

We need a protest.

We need protest songs. We need protest singers. We need protesters by the millions!

We need CSN & Y. We need Carlos Santana. We need Kenny Loggins. We need Joan Baez. We need John Fogerty. We need Arlo Guthrie. We need Melanie. We need to reinvoke the voice of protests past- men and women who are willing and able to come together once again and show this wasted generation how it's done, dammit.

We need anger. We need desire. We need people who know the truth and know how to sing about it. We need a mass of people so large it will shut down the state. (And I'm living in Texas, so that will take a LOT of people!)

We need to get a whole bunch of men, women, and children in one place, so when we all cry out "ENOUGH!!!" at the top of our collective voice it will be heard.

We need Max Yazgur and his 600 acre farm.

Just stay away from the brown acid. It's not, specifically, too good...

3. We need new bands
Supersuckers (Now these guys are revolutionists!)

The BellRays (They do a great tune called "Revolution Get Down" that could become an anthem... but it's being used to pimp SUV's at the moment)

Turbonegro (Lead man, Hank, recently blamed 9/11 on the Wright brothers:)

15. It would be very serious
if I did not harvest all the grass to feed my horses. I would LOVE it. There is a lovely festival in Lawrence just 30 miles away, I wonder if that land could be used? It is a very BIG festival, a 3 dayer I believe.

I have not been but have heard it is pretty good. I do know there is a LOT of traffic during the festival and apparently it is quite popular.

7. I've been inspired to write songs and poetry - but it's very raw
I'm embarrassed by the swear word ... My chorus is basically F U. :)

I deleted (which kinda pisses me off, because on retrospect one was pretty good)

8. Raw is good.
It's where everybody starts, and many actually become quite good at it.

Never underestimate "raw". It's pure power.

10. We need energetic, angry and uplifting songs
In the style of Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the national anthem.

Enough downer songs.

We need humor, ripping guitars, and stomping beats.

Here's my contribution. :-)

(beware, it has Cheney quotes, and thus, obscenity)

Do that on stage at our festival (or talk Alice into doing it) and your career would be made.

20. Thanks! I'll be there :-)
I don't think Alice would do it though -- he's become a right-winger. Can you imagine? I thought that his whole "dark side" thing was just an act, but apparently not.

The band that is backing me up is called The Jenn Cristy Band. They are great, and have a good political song called "American Waltz." They should definitely be at the show!

19. It will have to be something new I'm afraid...
... because a moment in time can never be duplicated.

Ever been to a party with no expectations, just something to do - and it turned out GREAT? Great people, great vibe, great time. Then the same person throws another party, invites pretty much the same people and it's a dud?

Life is funny that way.

23. Yes, we need washed up old hippies to show my generation how to be angry
We are angry, but most of the guys I'm arround assume that we're fucked. It's like living in Thatcher's England, "no future, no future, no future."

Personally, I'd argue we need a punk revival, but getting punks to work together is like herding cats or liberals, it just doesn't work too well.

24. Dude when it gets bad enough....
everybody comes together for the one true cause. When it's gonna be YOU going overseas to fight their corporate fight then it starts to hit home. The difference is that we had a draft and it was US going over to get killed. Get ready it's coming.

31. You know, it is us dying over there
It's a defacto draft. Kids with no better prospects join up, and end up fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Even I looked at the ROTC and National Guard programs, because college is going to put my ass in debt. It's not gonna get much worse when they put in a real draft, because half of us are expecting it, and the rest are pissed at them anyway.

And I guaran-damn-tee I can still kick ass when provoked.

Age is wisdom, NOT obsolescence. And the message is still the same, after all.

(And, BTW, I actually lived in Thatcher's England for two years, and managed to have one hell of a good time while there...)

There's a video over at Crooksandliars.com where Nixon is saying "When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal". We've seen this shit before. It is the same message after all.

Keep up the good fight.

Peace

29. I don't doubt you did, and I don't you can
But I've been to Arlo Gutherie concerts, and I've heard old peace movement hands talk about the current war, and you know what? It always either turns to pessimism (the country's not going to survive this), self-congradulation (we ended the vietnam war, goddammit, go us!), or condemnation (kids today don't care, and don't know shit).

And to be totally honest, I don't think that breakfast in bed for 40,000 on a farm in Texas would do any good. Maybe a simultaneous mid-afternoon smokebreak for 75,000 in DC, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and LA would. Or maybe a general strike, but good luck with that.

27. Pete Townshend could also be enlisted
In 1969 he forecefully ushered intruder Abbie "Stop this concert!" Hoffman off the stage with the help of his trusty Gibson SG. If the Who (what's left of 'em) was to play a genuine Woodstock reunion, a notable fundie wingnut or neocon might also be encouraged to amble up onstage, to voice opinion regarding whatever irrational message was currently pinging around in their pea brain. Townshend prefers a Stratocaster now, but they also pack a wallop. My choice of a willing victim would be Ralph Reed, although Chris Matthews comes in a close second. This re-enactment would hopefully transpire during "Won't Get Fooled Again"!

30. The biggest problem is that not only has money infected politics,
it's infected music, too. Not to mention everything else of worth. You'll never get 50 Cent or Britney to talk about anything else with their lyrics other than the vapid, insipid, insubstantial nothings that constitute the entirety of their thoughts, and consequently, the thoughts of every teenager and young adult that listens to their schlock with devotion. The days of the meritocracy of music are over, replaced by the insidious "give the people what they want" marketing scheme that foists meaningless drivel on unsuspecting radio listeners by campaigning for boy bands over hard-working, blue-collar rock and roll bands. American Idol is going to beat out the best band east of the Mississippi (that you've never heard of) every time, and you can bet that that dizzy no-talent is not going to waste his or her time promoting political causes.

The way things are these days, the paranoid side of me thinks the other side has thought of and planned for everything.

34. Thought - after reading the thread ... how about a moving party
50 states in 50 days or something - we ask for help from local artists. We petition the capital in each state - gaining and losing people but keeping a big number?

THAT would get some attention.
