I just heard Durbin say something interesting |
|
Turned on the TV, heard Durbin say that during the Reagan administration, Sam Alito was the one who encouraged the administration to use "signing statements" ... previously benign statements with no explicit effect ... to "have the last word," so to speak, on lawmaking.
Can anyone corroborate this? If so, this is huge. This is the guy who neutered Congress and John McCain ought to know about it.

1. With all the talking he does, Durbin is bound to say something interesting |
|
eventually by pure chance.
You are correct, though. I heard this someplace else, too.

4. True -an Alitto idea - but Court decisions accepting the authority of the |
|
signing statement are hard to come by -
but once Allito is on the USSC....... :-(
In any case Courts do not give that much weight to the various writings by Congress that often are produced on the way to passing a bill into law.
I doubt executive musings will get more -
unless Alitto gets on the USSC.
:-(

5. it's like a sandlot yelling match |
|
with kids squealing and laffing and screaming and kicking up their feet! - it certainly isn't about the future of the country, its legal basis in the constitution or the effect of absolute power corrupting the absolutely powerful....

Randi Rhodes has covered it quite a bit.
