If I may be permitted to pick on the DNC a little bit here: like many Americans (yes, including many Republicans) I was aghast to see how Shrubya and Racketeering Rove treated John McCain in 2000, and Max Cleland in 2002.
Now, we're seeing John Murtha attacked in PA, and Tammy Duckworth attacked in Illinois.
Here in Virginia, George "Macaca-mamie Excuses for Bigotry" Allen is pulling no punches in casting stones at the multi-generational military service of Jim Webb.
If Lee Atwater were alive today, and if he were a Democrat, he wouldn't say, "Nuh-uh. We're not cut and run Democrats. Don't define us that way. Oh, my God. Look! Do you see? Do you see? They're defining us with a label we don't deserve! Oh, the horror!"
He would hit back, hard, and nation-wide. He would pour DNC money into a standard commercial that began something like this (narrated by Max Cleland):
"President Bush and Karl Rove are at it again. Ashamed of their own non-existent military service, they dishonor the military service of those who actually did something in their nation's uniform.
We are not the party of cut and run. We are the party of Bled and Crawled. It is *our* sons, *our* daughters, and *our* candidates who can point proudly to a chest full of ribbons.
These are all of our House and Senate candidates this year who have personally served, or who have spouses, siblings, or children who have served (cut to picture of all the candidates, with Tammy Duckworth and other wounded veterans in the front row). They are not cut and runners, Mr. President. Like Tammy Duckworth, who lost both her legs fighting your war of choice, she is a bled and crawler.
(cut to customized local angle)
Here in (fill in the blank with Congressional District or State), (fill in the blank with the name of the Democratic candidate who is being portrayed as a cut and runner) is facing the latest smear campaign, engineered by a college dropout who wouldn't pick up a gun in service to his country (flash to unflattering photo of KKKarl Rove). His/her opponent, (fill in the blank with the GOP nominee) has refused to repudiate the White House attacks here in (fill in locality).
Here in (whereever), we know that patriotism can be found in both parties. So next time you hear a Republican extremist parrot back Karl Rove's 'cut and run' soundbite, ask them - how many in your party bled and crawled?"
