Proof that Republicans prefer fantasy to reality - SANTORUM
Via Salon:

In an interview with the editorial board of the Bucks County Courier Times, embattled Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has equated the war in Iraq with J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings." According to the paper, Santorum said that the United States has avoided terrorist attacks at home over the past five years because the "Eye of Mordor" has been focused on Iraq instead.

"As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else," Santorum said. "It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S. You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States."

Casey had better watch out - next thing you know, Ricky will smite him with his +5 Vorpal Sword of Wingnuttery!

1. So, I guess if Canada and Mexico ever go to war, it is okay and moral
for them to fight it out in Nebraska? How about in Pennsylvania, Crazy Ricky?

2. That Is An Interesting Analysis, Sir
Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 02:26 PM by The Magistrate
Pursued further, it suggests he views the United States as practically helpless against the Islamic foe, for the whole dynamic of that tale is pitched to the idea that Sauron is, essentially, so much more powerful than those opposing him that they have no prayer of victory in an open fight, and can only hope for victory through the hugely unlikely success of a forlorn hope, so insignifigant on its face it has a chance to escape notice by the virtually all-powerful enemy.

The peculiar mood of self-pity that animates the furthest reaches of the right, their evidently sincere belief they are weak and powerless in opposition to forces of titanic stature ranged against them, and on the very verge of ultimate victory over them, deserves serious study.

4. So maybe we need a new aggressive pro-environmental policy
So we can breed us some Ents?

You know, there's nothing the religious wingnuts hate worse than a betrayal to their cause, and it can be over the littlest things. Steve Largent lost the Oklahoma governor election because he cursed on air during an interview, and that alienated his wingnut base. One could make the case that such "evil" things like Dungeons and Dragons would not exist today if it weren't for Tolkien and other authors' writings. I believe Jack Chick attacked both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis in his tracts that dealt with roleplaying games.

Just to put the final nail into Santorum's coffin, we need to start up a "conservative religious interest group" in Pennsylvania in order to issue press releases against Rick and his interest in the occult. :)

6. LMAO... Listen little Rickey, there is nothing to fear
even if the "eye" comes to America, we are going to be fine. I'm sure we could put together the combined might of Superman, Batman and the Jedi Knights to save us from "the eye"...

8. I am a huge LOTR fan; but
it strikes me as rather odd for anyone over the age of 22 to make any comparison to it
