Poll question: What party will you vote in November?
Serious question. Wondering if anybody's going to vote 3rd party or Republican. If so, why?

3. Not that it's a third party,
but some of my votes will be DFL. Democratic-Farmer-Labor, the proud Democratic Party in Minnesota. Not that I'm picky about it, or anything.

12. Actually, I Consider Green Voters To Be Worse.
At least those voting for the republicans are fighting for something. In my opinion those that vote for the greens are not only throwing their vote away, not only being selfish by contributing to the possibility of the Dems not regaining control, but also are voting simply out of spite. They know they won't win, they know they won't affect change, they know they have no real stake, but their vote to me is basically just an obnoxious gradeschooler-toned reply to society of "I down't wike any uv you so I'mmmm gunna vote fur this guy. Hmfph."

9. But in some states...
I may not vote on party lines.

I know we need DEM majority but I don't think I could vote for any current DEM senator who voted in favor of the torture bill.

I have a friend in Mich. who is struggling with that decision.

In CT, it's a bit different b/c all of the DEM candidates are loyal DEMS, imo.

Edited on Tue Oct-17-06 05:40 PM by nam78_two
And she isn't a senator I particularly care for overall, but Bouchard is just straight up scary.
So I totally see how awful the choices are for your friend and anyone in MI really.
Unfortunately we aren't at a stage where we can afford to not choose the lesser of two evils -at least imo :shrug:...

I like the Greens but I think in a crisis situation like this, the first objective for anyone should be to get these crazy people out of office...
If that had a shot in hell of being done via the Green Party I would be all for it, but thats just not gonna happen any time soon :(.

19. Good point.
But one can just not vote in that particular race if they feel so strongly. I don't think my friend in question is going to vote for the repuke. I think they may just not vote at all.

It's one way to make an individual point.

30. Sorry. I disagree. Not voting is abdicating a responsibility.
imho, voting is not only a right, but a responsibility. And, if one chooses to vote Republican or Green in this election, instead of Democrat, that is their right and there are plenty of web sites out there that are set up to support similarly minded voters.

Our guidelines here on DU are pretty clear:

Who We Are: Democratic Underground is an online community for Democrats and other progressives. Members are expected to be generally supportive of progressive ideals, and to support Democratic candidates for political office. Democratic Underground is not affiliated with the Democratic Party, and comments posted here are not representative of the Democratic Party or its candidates.

and

Constructive criticism of Democrats or the Democratic Party is permitted. When doing so, please keep in mind that most of our members come to this website in order to get a break from the constant attacks in the media against our candidates and our values. Highly inflammatory or divisive attacks that echo the tone or substance of our political opponents are not welcome here.

You are not permitted to use this message board to work for the defeat of the Democratic Party nominee for any political office. If you wish to work for the defeat of any Democratic candidate in any General Election, then you are welcome to use someone else's bandwidth on some other website.

Democratic Underground may not be used for political, partisan, or advocacy activity by supporters of any political party or candidate other than the Democratic Party or Democratic candidates. Supporters of certain other political parties may use Democratic Underground for limited partisan activities in political races where there is no Democratic Party candidate.

40. Yup. Each branch of govt has rights & responsibilities....
... The people are one of the branches, if unnamed as such, and its primary obligation is to vote responsibly.

The electorate has been the greatest all of the failures of American government. And it never gets acknolwedged - instead they claim simply to be the victim.

34. Sorry...
I still say the vote you cast to satisfy your noble intention (absolutely no sarcasm there) is a vote taken away from the dem party, and therefore the undeniable fact that it's a plus for the repugs. Logic tells me that, and when the stakes are high enough, as they are now, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet. Thanks.

is in your head? That "THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM" line lost its punch during the first Bush presidency. Clearly there was a different between Gore and Bush.

COMMENT
THE “IC” FACTOR
Issue of 2006-08-07
Posted 2006-07-31

What is the name of a certain political party in the United States—not the one which controls the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the federal government but the other one, which doesn’t? The question is a small one, to be sure: a minor irritation, a wee gnat compared to such red-clawed, sharp-toothed horrors as the health-care mess and the budget deficit, to say nothing of Iraq and Lebanon. But it has been around longer than any of them, and, annoyingly, it won’t go away.

Last week, the gnat was buzzing at a high altitude. An e-mail from none other than “President George W. Bush,” arriving last Monday morning in millions of in-boxes, hinted strongly at where the Commander-in-Chief stands on the name issue. To wit:
The Democrat Party has a clear record when it comes to taxes.
And:
Nothing threatens our hard-won reforms and economic prosperity more than a Democrat victory this November.
<snip>
An alternative view is that it’s called the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party itself takes this view, and many nonpartisan authorities agree. The American Heritage College Dictionary, for example, defines the noun “Democratic Party” as “One of the two major US political parties, owing its origin to a split in the Democratic-Republican Party under Andrew Jackson in 1828.” (It defines “Democrat n” as “A Democratic Party member” and “Democratic adj” as “Of, relating to, or characteristic of the Democratic Party,” but gives no definition for—indeed, makes no mention of—“Democrat Party n” or “Democrat adj”.) Other dictionaries, and reference works generally, appear to be unanimous on these points. The broader literate public also comes down on the “Democratic” side, as indicated by frequency of usage. A Google search for “Democratic Party” yields around forty million hits. “Democrat Party” fetches fewer than two million.
<snip>
There’s no great mystery about the motives behind this deliberate misnaming. “Democrat Party” is a slur, or intended to be—a handy way to express contempt. Aesthetic judgments are subjective, of course, but “Democrat Party” is jarring verging on ugly. It fairly screams “rat.” At a slightly higher level of sophistication, it’s an attempt to deny the enemy the positive connotations of its chosen appellation. During the Cold War, many people bridled at obvious misnomers like “German Democratic Republic,” and perhaps there are some members of the Republican Party (which, come to think of it, has been drifting toward monarchism of late) who genuinely regard the Democratic Party as undemocratic. Perhaps there are some who hope to induce it to go out of existence by refusing to call it by its name, à la terming Israel “the Zionist entity.” And no doubt there are plenty of others who say “Democrat Party” just to needle the other side while signalling solidarity with their own—the partisan equivalent of flashing a gang sign.
<snip>

21. Please, fix the poll -- it's ****DEMOCRATIC PARTY****
Not Democrat (sic), nor do we vote Democrat (sic). It's the Democratic Party, and we vote Democratic, for the Democratic candidate.

I'm not a grammar nazi -- I just don't want anyone to get in this habit, since it's a "right-wing thing" to refer to the Democratic Party as the "Democrat (sic) Party." :grr:
