DU Folding@Home Thread #6 - Team DU Moving Up!
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 08:13 PM by mcscajun
Team DU is kicking ass and taking initials...we ain't got time for no names!

We're doing more and more important medical research every week! Imagine catching and passing the freepers, doing medical research and letting your computer do it all for you? How's that for an offer you can't refuse? How? All you need to do is join Team # 48157, Democratic Underground's own Folding@Home Team!

Join the Team here: http://folding.stanford.edu

Since ny_liberal sounded the first call on December 22, 2005, 131 DUers have donated the spare computing cycles of 185 CPUs to the cause. We started out small; our ranking was around the 17,000 mark out of over 40,000 teams.

Today, we're firmly entrenched in the Top 1500 Teams and going for the top 1000!

Date of last work unit 2006-01-25 16:19:50

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=48157

:woohoo: :applause: :woohoo:

Our DU CPUs are busily simulating the folding of proteins to support medical research into diseases and disorders that kill, cripple, and impair human life. Help the work...help find cures!

Every PC has spare computing cycles to contribute to the effort. The program is small and runs in background, can be paused at any time, or closed entirely if your workload or hobbies require more CPU resources. There's even an interesting graphic to let you watch the simulation in progress. Old PCs, Slow PCs, Spare PCs lying around that can be attached to your home network all help the cause. The race may go to the swift, but slow and steady racks up points, too!

Mac and Linux clients are available, also.

You can have fun catching Freepers along the way. It's a great fringe benefit to joining Team DU. :)

The Freeper team stands in the top 500 -- let's knock 'em off that pedestal they're sneering down on us from; what do you say, DU?

Join the Team here: http://folding.stanford.edu

If you've already joined the team, there's still more you can do. Send out the call to your progressive friends and family; get them to join our team!

C'mon, DUers! More CPUs!!!

2. I just added a second CPU running the command-line version
I hope I don't screw it up.

Anyway, I have six liquid-nitrogen cooled Cray Supercomputers in my basement. Now I can only use five of them to surf for porn.

Here is how it looks for us.

Here's how it looks for a team (one of the non-flatliners (compared to us)) that is being overtaken.
Let's do this to the freepers some day real soon. :-)

22. I just thought it would make it a lot easier if it launched automatically.
I have mine launching at login. I don't need to know how to do it on Windows because nobody here uses MS products.

I just thought Windows users might know how to do it, then tell other Windows users.

23. Sorry if I sounded curt (I reread). Really - the best instruction you can
get is from the site you choose. Search folding & genome Project .. find the project you want to be involved with and follow their instructions. Trust me - they are put out there for easy use. They want your help.

It is nice to know that we are helping others as we gab away.

Good luck

29. If you're running the Command-Line version on Windows 2000/XP
The best option is to set it up as a Service. There's an option when you first run the CLI (along with all the other prompts) to set it run as a service. Then, upon the 1st reboot, it will always start at boot (even if you don't login at the Ctrl+Alt+Del window).

If you're not running 2000/XP, just put a shortcut to the Folding executable in your Startup folder.

12. Welcome.
Be sure to set it up so when you turn your computer on, the Folding@Home client starts on its own. I know how to do it on the Mac, you will have to ask someone that knows the Windows platform. It shouldn't be hard at all. There might be a Wizard to tell you how to do it.

I just joined last week and I am loving it.

I know it may not seem like a massive deal, but helping with science / medicine is a huge innovation, and I am please to be a part of it.
I am even more pleased to be helping screw the freepers as part of Team DU!

Join Now, help us recreate destiny!
You know you want too.

FYI, I do heavy graphical computations on my computer, files in excess of 200-500 meg all the time, I don't find this app slows me down at all, so if that is your concern, perhaps delete that dancing bikini app thats sucking that 2% of CPU power and install this instead.

24. Congratulations!
I joined this past weekend and was chugging right along until I lost my WU
due to an "improper shutdown". It was halfway finished when I left this morning, but I came home and found a frozen computer - the screen was totally black and the mouse and keyboard weren't working. Didn't know what else to do except a manual shutdown.

I just deleted my 'dancing bikini' files after reading your post and my computer is folding away. Thanks for the suggestion.

It's great to see our team doing so well!

once for "an important system update" just rebooted, lost a whole work unit, so I am letting my mac chunk them away now.

Edit to say, I meant no harm by insinuating people had dancing bikini people on there desktop, I mean seriously.... who am I to judge, if dancing bikini-girl desktop icons are your thing, so be it, thats cool, its just...well, folding some goddamned proteins is my thing, like it or lump it, WHOOHOOO

This one is for you corporate mike.

Here is the graph that the freepers posted on their site the other day. When they found out I had linked to the graph they changed it. But I had already captured it so I could repost it.

What this graph demonstrates is that DU's progress in the first 32 days is greater than what the freepers could muster in their first 32 days.

We need to keep the momentum going.

and thought that our momentum was waning. I am still happily folding on 3 computers, and when I checked the FAH DU stats page, it seemed we are still growing leaps and bounds, but I couldnt figure out where our folding threads went. I figured everyone was distracted with other things going on. Then I finally find you guys over here and I am so thrilled to see all the newbies and the oldbies still going strong! I am so proud of our DU team! Let's keep spreading the word! Fold on!

I saw her this morning on CSPAN and figured out she was battle cancer again. I saw a thread on the "Greatest" page that Molly has breast cancer again. It was diagnosed around Thanksgiving. I like a lot of what Molly says. I don't always agree with her but those few times that I don't I at least understand where she is coming from and can respect her for it.

Let's continue trying to increase the number of participants and CPUs on the DU F@H team to research the diseases that are afflicting many of our brave brothers and sisters who, like the netizens of DU, believe in restoring America to the American people.

mo_kids should be showing up shortly, but they are a little bogged down with spywear, and need a wipe.
bumped into a few firewalls, and some inertia, but we are off and running.

104. Reason to be (very) optomistic, re: catching and bypassing freepers
A cross-post of sorts. Original posted here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2400013&mesg_id=2402659

Updated version.

From a link on the extremeoverclocking link (http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=48157) provided in the above mentioned thread, I noticed that stats are started on teams only after they enter the top 2,000. see: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/?nav=FAQ )

Freepers first showed up on the radar in Nov. 2005 with 12,451 points and 128 WUs completed. DU first showed up on the Jan. 2006 statistics and these stats are still climbing. When I first noticed this the DU team had 101,769 points and 781 WUs completed. Currently we are credited (on the extremeoverclocking link) with 102,807 points and 788 WUs completed.

sources: for DU http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=48157
for freepers: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=36120

In otherwords, we are off to a better start than the freepers and they know it. Their number of new members and particpants has leveled out and ours are still climbing.

BTW, the numbers on the extremeoverclocking link are updated every three hours, currently (on the more offical F@H DU Folding page, here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=48157) we are officially credited with the following:

Date of last work unit 2006-01-27 21:17:14
Active CPUs within 50 days 201
Team Id 48157
Grand Score 197886 (certificate)
Work Unit Count 1607 (certificate)
Team Ranking (incl. aggregate) 1156 of 42428

On the official F@H DU Team Page we have almost double the number of WUs completed! mscajun is right, we're kicking ass.

Let's keep it up DU.

Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 09:46 AM by mcscajun
In the "Teams Overall Rank", we're #1 for "Change in 7 Days" -- that's a testimony to our continued growth and phenomenal speed in doing so. :)

We're # 4 for "Change in 24 Hrs"

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s=&srt=9

We're also in the Top 100 (97 and moving up!) for 24 Hour Points Average.

123. They run stat updates at different times...
...for consistency, I'm sticking with the Stanford stats for updates. It gets too confusing otherwise.

Nice to check in with Extreme Overclocking from time to time though, for the graphs and Team Overtake Lists. :)

A few more people signed up today. Their WUs will start showing up later this week. I've almost got a friend convinced to join the DU team. He's been to a few meetups but isn't on-line that much (which would actually make him perfect for this - since he doesn't use his computer much). His son is very interested but may want to join a team with his friends. Hey, the real goal is the research, so the more the merrier, although I admit I wish he'd help us out. I just need to find a few more friends to sign up for the DU team.

144. Our first month total: 152,177 points - 1,135 WUs completed
152,177 points from 1,135 WU completed.

The freepers' first month total was 12,451 points with 128 WUs completed. The freepers' second month total was 154,578 points with 1,449 WUs completed.

That's right, in our first month we made it into the top 1,000 teams (hitting the radar of the top 2,000 teams on January 16) and we folded almost as many WUs and garnered as many points as the freepers did it their second month! Since Team DU's origin in late December we've had 153 DU'ers sign up.

:applause:

To catch the freepers we need more DU'ers to join us. So, just do it!
