Colbert celebrating his One Year Anniversary tonight
His opening was a riot ... "we've been together for one year but I would still so do you".

1. Am I the only one watching tonight?
Stephanie Tubbs-Jones was just featured. Colbert did a fake case in front of Tubbs-Jones so he could see how she was when she was a judge. She played along so well!

2. I'm looking forward to this!
I didn't get to see him until a few weeks into the show last year (Canada didn't start showing it right away). But he's already become a tradition in my household.

I was trying to figure out why a character whom he's deliberately made so outrageous is so darned likeable! There is a certain earnestness and decency about him which I suspect is a carryover from the real guy. For example, when he drops out of character to defend people whom he feels have been treated unfairly (like Congressman Wexler, and the Bush impersonator Steve Bridges). Reading between the lines, I suspect Bridges said something kind to Colbert after that press dinner, and Colbert has not forgotten it.

4. I feel sorry for that Bush impersonator
He's really good. Too bad the guy he's playing is an evil megalomaniac.

8. he also does Clinton and "Ah-nuld" impressions
And he was working on Kerry as well, during the last election. I think he realizes how limited a demand there would be to see Dubya, especially once he's out of office. I'm impressed by how hard he works -- he regularly crosses the country, undergoes several hours of makeup, and does a gig that lasts most of an evening. He probably puts in more hours than Bush does!

6. I think that's the key to his success
that he DOES remain so likeable. I think he just can't stay in character sometimes. You see him covering his mouth with a piece of paper and things like that, when he's about to laugh. There was the gleeful look on his face when he was "pushing" Neil Young off his show, and lots of little moments like that.

Unlike the people he's spoofing, his decency, AND his humor come through loud and clear, and it makes him just plain likeable (or in my case, loveable).

7. I'm amazed that he doesn't break character more often!
Several times during each show, he managed to remain straight-faced over things that just crack me up. I would not want to play poker against him!
