An OP-ED worth reading-------Get the guns out of your homes
Get the guns out of your homes
By Mary Sanchez
10-15-2006
More school shootings, and the inevitable commentary on the evening news: “I didn't think this sort of thing could happen here.”

The heartfelt, but naive belief that murderous rampages “don't happen here” begs the question: “Where do you think such things happen?”

Labels exist for the places where shootings occur: urban, inner city; all code for where black and Latino people live and yes, far too often die to senseless gun violence.

I'm really thinking of asking my partner to get rid of his hunting rifles what with all these shooting lately, it seems like a flipping epidemic.

1. I will give up my guns when
I have a government I can trust with my rights. Until then, I will use my 2nd ammendment rights to defend my first ammendment rights.

4. Come on do think you can fight the military
with what you have at home?:eyes: You do realize that they have tanks and planes and alot more bigger and better guns that you. And for the other two posters my partner does keep them in a safe, but I don't think its enough.

2. Buy ,and then place them, in a gun safe, if you are so concerned.
Don't wait until it's too late. If you are truly concerned about someone getting a hold of weapons in your home, keep both the weapons and the people safe by locking them up.

3. You can have my gun...
after you pull the corpses of your fascist buddies off and pry it from my dead hand. Its my right to own firearms, and I'm damn well gonna exercise my right.

I follow the rules of responsibility, use a safe, have the necessary permits, etc. Why should I yield on my right? Just because some people misuse their right doesn't mean we all should loose it. This same logic can and sometimes is used to justify efforts to remove protections of the 4th, 5th and 8th amendments.

I'm a member of the ACLU, do you really think I'm the type to go "yeah, I wasn't using my right, so you can just take it away."

5. Ummm...no thanks.
I am pro-choice on gun ownership. I think gun ownership carries with it significant responsibility, and we do take safety seriously (including keeping our guns in a safe when not in use), but my wife and I DO choose to exercise that right, and we will not give it up.

As far as your partner's hunting rifles--per the FBI, rifles of all kinds (including so-called "assault weapons," FWIW) are rarely misused, accounting for less than 3% of homicides annually. Getting rid of them would be a bit illogical. Get a safe, if you're that concerned.

6. worth reading?
more like an utter waste of time.

I sometimes wonder what those Korean shopkeepers, in south central LA, think about when reading this type of swill. Many of them were able to
save their shops with just a few family members with well placed shotguns. Guns may not help things after the authorities arrive, but there's nothing that says "closed for business" better, until authorities can get a handle on the situation.
