Dumbsfeld denies military stretched thin, brags they are 'battle-hardened'
WASHINGTON - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday disputed reports suggesting that the U.S. military is stretched thin and close to a snapping point from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, asserting "the force is not broken."

"This armed force is enormously capable," Rumsfeld told reporters at a Pentagon briefing. "In addition, it's battle hardened. It's not a peacetime force that has been in barracks or garrisons."

Rumsfeld spoke a day after The Associated Press reported that an unreleased study conducted for the Pentagon said the Army is being overextended, thanks to the two wars, and may not be able to retain and recruit enough troops to defeat the insurgency in Iraq....

In an apparent shot at the Democratic Clinton administration, Rumsfeld said a number of components of the armed forces were underfunded during the 1990s, "and there were hollow pieces to it. Today, that's just not the case."

Boy, talk about someone with their head up their ass! I love how he takes the 'blame Clinton' approach - when the fact is most of those military budget cuts were passed by a Republican Congress!

1. LOL
The national guard called here earlier this week asking for me! I'm female and they were asking for me to join the national guard. LOL. They used to bug my brother until one time my mother answered the phone when he wasn't around and told them to bug off.

2. Send Dumbsfeld out to Iraq and see how hardened he will become
Perhaps he would like to sample some of the torturous methods himself.

4. Battle Hardened Troops
That's what Hitler thought right before he invaded Russia (and got his ass kicked all the way home)
Same with Napoleon.

Rumsfield is so arrogant.. he has become a fool

6. Hmmm. Didn't Stalin say something similar in WWII?
It was something about letting the soldiers get bloodied so that they fight better.

7. Rummy wouldn't know...
... "battle-hardened" if it kicked him in the nuts.

The military was actually overfunded in the `90s--for its Constitutional task of defending our territory--but, to the people who want to wage multiple wars around the world for entirely specious reasons (like Rummy), there's never enough money appropriated. As long as we believe we're the cops of the world, protecting the interests of our multinationals, there never will be enough money or soldiers or weapons.

9. LOL - Yeah, I can see Dumsfeld's point now
It's kinda hard to invade and occupy Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, Afghanistan, and any other country we deem a "terror threat" simultaneously with what we have now.

11. Well, they've done a splendid job of subdoing Iraq...oh, wait.
But, the survivors are becoming "battle hardened" in preparation for Iran..or Syria..or Grenada.
