Washington Post Endorses Jim Webb
THE U.S. SENATE race in Virginia pits a novice politician, Democrat James Webb , against a much more experienced one, incumbent Republican George Allen, who spent much of the early fall obliterating his reputation for amiable charm and political deftness. As Mr. Allen has partially admitted, his wounds in the close race have been mostly self-inflicted and have left a sour taste in the mouths of many Virginians. Still, there is an even better reason to vote against Mr. Allen: Quite simply, he is a mediocre senator whose six years of undistinguished service do not justify rehiring.

His opponent -- former Navy secretary, former assistant defense secretary, former Marine Corps officer and former Republican -- is admirably independent-minded. He was prescient in warning, back in 2002, that the war in Iraq risked stranding the United States in a long-term occupation without an exit strategy. An intelligent man with a record of integrity, he has resisted the packaging of political consultants, which can only be a good thing. Those assets, as well as his deep familiarity with military and national security affairs, offer the promise that he would make an able, if unorthodox, U.S. senator. And the fact that his youngest son is deployed as a marine in Iraq gives him a perspective that is rare in today's Congress.

...Mr. Allen lacks any comparable independent-mindedness....Mr. Allen has accomplished little for his state's most dynamic region....Mr. Allen was busy grooming himself for a possible 2008 presidential race....He is no one's idea of a heavyweight in the Senate.

Virginians deserve better and more enlightened representation. Mr. Webb offers that hope.

5. This is great.
I lived the majority of my life in Fairfax Virginia and it's nice to see my home town possibly kicking this schmuck to the curb. Allen can kiss his Presidential hopes good bye as well. He was a major rising star in the Republican party and possibly one they had as a major front runner. I am tickled pink he will be tossed in the trash.

7. But why? I mean the repukes could have saved his ass even
after the Macacca incident. The could have put the squeeze to the media and the story would have never gotten as big as it did. But they let every crooked and/or stupid thing this guy's said or done get out to the public. Like someone leaked it.

I may be just too suspicious anymore but I think that someone somewhere put the kibosh to this bufoon's political career. I just don't know why.

Sec. of Navy under Reagan have a lot to do with this endorsement.

However, "Macaca" was such a gift. It opened up Allen's racist past to scrutiny that not even the most hardened corporate media whores could ignore. And when he had a public fit over having his Jewish heritage mentioned and ended up explaining that he still eats ham sandwiches, well, he just proved himself to be an even bigger ass. (The Washington Post ran a piece about his wife a couple of weeks ago, and she explained that he was so "upset" about the Jewish incident, she couldn't be "mad" at him. Guess there's plenty of anti-Semitism to go around in that family.)

Now let's hope that voters will choose the military guy with the distinguished career over the racist idiot named George with the famous father. That the race is still so close is distressing. Allen absolutely needs to go.

15. Felix has been locked away in a closet until after the election...
Webb needs to get out there and take advantage, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

9. The only reason Allen was a repub possibility for pres
was because he is equally if not more stupid than *. They need puppets in that office that can do what they're told. Keep in mind that every time frist objected to something * was trying to push in the senate, frist would reverse himself a day later, making it obvious that he was "spoken to." Same thing with specter.

10. The best part of the campaign is that Mark Warner has said
Now that he is not running for president, he is got the time to campaign with Webb over the next three weeks. He has already started and they have an event in Tidewater this week, I think. Mark Warner is the most popular politican in VA, even more popular than the other Warner!!!

12. Fellow Virginians - let's get rid of that piece of garbage once and for
all. I get the same reaction when seeing/hearing Felix as *. Puke city. I'm on a fixed income (low), but donated again to Webb's campaign on Monday. Also did the matching DCCC donation this morning that's in effect thru Friday with a 3-1 match. Hopefully, some of that money will free up the senate campaign money for Webb.
