Need help finding - Ashcroft's Nude Statue /Cover up
Need help in finding a picture of Ashcroft's nude statue where he had it covered while giving some speech. My co-workers have never seen it - in fact they just got done being introduced to his singing abilities(Let the Eagle Soar). I am trying to educate my peers about Asscroft before he goes on the Daily Show tonight.

Much appreciation and thanks to anyone who can find the picture that shows the statue covered up - so far I have only been able to locate the uncovered versions.

2. The statue is Lady Justice
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 09:26 AM by KyndCulture
and if you google I bet you can find the pics. She was covered in a blue drape that looked strikingly like a burqa.

Try searching when the eagle soars, cause that's when he covered up her boobies

11. it would simply be a picture of someone standing in front of a blue
background. I've looked and haven't found any either.

4. probably going to be hard to find a picture
since they simply put blue drapes up in front of the entire statue in 2002. By the way, they took the drapes back down again in 2005.

5. Here's a USA Today article............Justice Department covers partially
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 09:30 AM by RedEarth
WASHINGTON (AP) — No longer will the attorney general be photographed in front of two partially nude statues in the Great Hall of the Department of Justice.

The department spent $8,000 on blue drapes that hide the two giant, aluminum art deco statues, said spokesman Shane Hix. For aesthetic reasons, he said, the drapes were occasionally hung in front of the statues before formal events. The department used to rent the drapes, but has now purchased them and left them hanging.

The drapes provide a nice background for television cameras, Hix said.

ABC News reported that Attorney General John Ashcroft ordered the statues covered because he didn't like being photographed in front of them.

Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, Ashcroft has been photographed several times in front of the female statue that represents the Spirit of Justice. The 10- to 12-foot statue has its arms raised and a toga draped over its body, but a single breast is completely exposed.

The other statue, of a man with a cloth covering his midsection, is called the Majesty of Law.

At least that's what the OP said.

13. And in the 'after' pics, he just appears to be standing in front of drapes
as I recall, they were navy blue and cost about 7000 - 8000 taxpayer bucks. Lotta cash for drapes that covered a statue but left the boob for all to see.

18. I think I recall that a curtain was place in between
so she wasn't actually covered in a burka,
there was just a blue curtain in the background.
You might have to look for photos or videos of press conferences from that period.

23. Neither are accurate, but I'm guessing you were going for wit
The first is a woman in a burkah, the second is marble. The DOJ statue is aluminum with upraised arms.

17. I don't have a link to the pic of the statue with the drapes. but...
...I can give you my favorite Ashcroft story:

Let the Mighty Eagle Swear

So on my way to Seattle, Alaska Air has this cool in-flight feature where you can rent a personal digital entertainment player. It comes pre-packed with several movies, TV shows, music videos, and such.

So I watched the movie Sidways. First, super movie. Though I didn't get to see the last 15 percent of it.

Here's the funny part: Though it was clearly marked "Rated R," for some reason the version they offered us on the flight was ensored. "Fucking," for example, was overdubbed with "flipping." Thomas Hayden Church at one point called Paul Giamatti a "flippin' tuna fish," which had me wondering what the original line was for a good ten minutes.

But each time one of the characters used the word "asshole," the dub came out "Ashcroft." The first time it happened, I thought I had misheard. But it then happened several more times over the course of the movie. I thought it was hillarious. Every asshole was made into an Ashcroft.

And as the writer of that piece demonstrated with a link to a Google search on the "mis"dubbing, he was not the only one to notice! Too funny.

20. Here's what I found in a quick search.
One of the statues before being covered. I think there are many images like this from before they spent $8000 on the blue drapes.

Next is a shot of just the blue-drape-hidden statue of Lady Justice, without Asshole in front of it (thank heaven).

Then this, from what is surely a spoof website, you can read it at the link below -- I thought it was pretty funny.

http://www.uncoveror.com/burqa.htm

There were plenty of articles and opinion pieces about this. I just Googled Ashcroft statue justice blue drapes and got a lot of good articles. Read some of 'em, and found myself marveling once again at that asshole's mentality ... and the people who put up with his bizarre act while he was there. Not to mention the moran who gave him the job. :puke:

26. Me too -- maybe could find one with him in front of it,
but I am not inspired to spend that much time on it. I loathe looking at the man any more than I really must!

It's amazing that the barrage of objections, critical articles, and mockery pieces that issued just after he covered the two statues (I think it was two) didn't faze him one bit. Didn't cause a change of mind by the soaring songster or bring enough pressure on him to force the drapes' removal, either, as apparently the drapes were NOT removed until Gonzales took over.

Several of the articles I found were titled things like "Covering Up Justice," and "Justice Under Wraps."

It would be so funny -- if it weren't so public and so pathetic. The entire nation was embarrassed ... not by the statues, but by the asshole that thought he ought to hide them. He never even seemed to recognize what a bizarro idiot he showed himself to be with just that one move.

IMO those are the most dangerous types -- the "true believers" who will listen to no opinion that does not align with their own. They're sold on a cause they honestly do believe in, and they'll go any distance to show it ... just like the suicide-bombing mass-murderers who profess Islam as they massacre innocents.

Gonzales may be an even more dangerous asshole than Ashcroft was because he's much smarter and believes in a different, more subtle type of "cause" -- more subtle in its early stages anyway. But at least he did have the good sense to uncover the classic statues that represent the principle of JUSTICE in this country.

27. Maybe because he viewed calico cats as "impure mixed breeding"?
Sounds like something he might think anyway. He's probably all for eugenics to keep the "master race" of white pasty men pure and their blood blue. :puke:

30. Once again, Snopes to the Rescue
Here is the link and the complete story. I was under the impression that Ashcroft had the statue draped with a blue curtain so the breast was covered. He actually had a huge curtain made to cover up both the male and female statue.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/valentine.asp

There are pictures of Ashcroft with the female statue behind him, breast upright and glistening and then a picture of the hall with the large blue curtain that hides the statue and the podium in front of it.
