Mark Foley Reveals to Archdiocese of Miami Name of Clergyman He Says Abused Him As a Teenager

Disgraced former U.S. Congressman Mark Foley has revealed to the Archdiocese of Miami the name of the Roman Catholic clergyman he says abused him as a teenager, a close friend of Foley's said Tuesday.

The name was not made public and it was not immediately clear whether the person was still active in the church or is alive.

Foley's civil attorney Gerald Richman was to make the announcement at a news conference Tuesday evening, the friend told The Associated Press, on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the case.

According to the source, the church offered Foley counseling in the matter, which Foley accepted. He plans to begin that counseling after completing treatment for alcoholism.

so he will go from the abuse hidyhole to the catholic counseling hidyhole.

the Archdiocese of Miami has it's own problems with sexual abuse and even murder

1. "It was not immediately clear whether the person..."
Ever existed in the first place? Has the archdiocese confirmed that any such information was provided, and whether or not that information was valid?

3. This still doesn't change the fact that he's a PREDATOR
and his repuke party covered that fact up...for political purposes. They left the children exposed to him and that's unforgivable.

Many people were abused as children and didn't go on to be pedophiles or child predators. Foley and the repukes can't sweep this one under the rug.

5. so he told only the people who will protect the abuser!
Not people who are parents of potential victims.

Is this SOP for the GOP? Protect the abuser -- blame the victims -- cry "overkill" when society demands justice?

6. Some People Seem to Be Under the Assumption It's EASY to Report a Priest
Well, it's not. It's a shame the Meeting Room archives are no longer available, my story of the church's reaction to notification was there.

I do not, and would not, discount Foley's story of clergy abuse.

This issue should not be confused with his actions towards the pages, not ever. If he's telling the truth, it *may* offer some explanation towards his conduct, but never an excuse.

That priest, if he existed, didn't turn Mark Foley gay. He merely took advantage of what was already there, and perhaps taught him to do the same.

Why Foley would turn to the Church for counseling, though is absolutely baffling. It's an indicator, IMO, of just how fucked-up Foley is. There's no way on God's green earth I would accept counseling from an institution that's going to tell me I'm a whore for engaging in pre-marital sex. I can't understand, for the life of me, why a homosexual would put themselves up for that, either.

7. If it didn't matter lo these several decades, why does is suddenly
matter now?

Is he trying to build a constituency out of priest-phobes?
