Scheduling the Saddam verdict pre-election will prove a mistake.
I am betting Rove screwed up in a massive way with this little stunt.

What the Bushie morans fail to understand is that Iraq will erupt when the Saddam verdict is announced. There will be mass deaths. His tribesmen will do something memorable, for sure. It will not make us look victorious, it will make us look weak.

Blowback is a bitch.

1. When are they supposed to announce a verdict?

2. I think you are probably right.
Of course, "Iraq Erupting" and "US citizens LEARNING that Iraq is erupting"
are two VERY different things. Gotta love that MSM!

14. In either case, our troops in Iraq will pay the price for Rove's stunt
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 04:48 PM by Vitruvius
when the Sunnis erupt at the scripted verdict & sentence of death for Saddam. But why should Rove care? No child of his is over there.

Hanging Saddam isn't worth the life of one single American soldier. But Rove, Bush, Cheney, and the rest of those yellow-bellies don't give a damn.

3. November 5th
The ended the trial 27th July. And have now started on the second trial. So they have had the verdict for three months and wait til November 5th to announce it. rove's handy work all over it.

5. I don't think Iraqis care about Saddam either way. They are
worried about food, water, gas, death, not about a former dictator. What am I missing?

6. This has been all along a political decision
they annouced months ago that verdict would be announced before the end of October, now it has been shifted to Sunday - Nov 5th. Rove trying to get a last minute bump of support.

10. Well, massive demostrations in support of Saddam would be a
major embarassment to this administration, I think. And that's a distinct possibility given a relative comparison of living conditions, pre-invasion and today. Personally, I think it won't have much impact on the election, except that we all know that this administration would use this for the most cynical of purposes.

8. Another thing...
I think a lot of Americans will consider the conviction of Saddam a huge reason to end the war. We went in there and got him and it's done is the mindset of a lot of Americans once they convict Saddam and plot his execution.

This will only emphasize the Republican strategy of staying infinitely and will hurt them.

9. You'd have to be pretty stupid not to see through that
My hope is that the American people will have the opposite reaction Rove would like; they'll be outraged at the manipulation.

11. it's going to be very no matter what the verdict and i'm guessing it will
be guilty on all counts. I expect we're going to see a big uptick in violence. Like Iraq isn't violent enough now already, i can't imagine what it will look like doubled or tripled.

12. Yes, I agree
I don't think Americans care about Saddam--we never did as long as he wasn't threatening us. This will only serve to emphasize what a massive problem Bushco and the Republicans have created with this senseless war.

13. Not only that, but it just shows what a quagmire we're in, and how
Saddam's arrest meant NOTHING. Plus how can they convict him on charges of torturing people, when he has the * defense: "It was legal by default because I was the one doing it"

16. That is what I have been thinking too, patcox
It is also so transparent, that I can't imagine most Americans will not see it for what it is...

Heaven forbid if they actually try to hang him right away (assuming, of course). They will launch a national eruption of violence that will make everything to date look like a polo match.
