ROFLMAO--I've got a new hero
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 04:01 PM by me b zola
Reading through my voters pamphlet for ballot measures there is a ballot measure that would require parental notification for teen girls seeking abortion. I of course oppose this but was reading through the arguments in favor of this measure when I came across my newest hero...M Dennis Moore.

It costs a person or group $500 to have their argument published in the pamphlet, and M Dennis Moore wrote three separate, mostly satirical arguments. Although Mr. Moore clearly is against this measure, all of his arguments were written as arguments in favor of the measure. The first one he signed, M Dennis Moore, Special Righteousness Council.

The second he ended his argument by writing in bold: VOTE YES TO STOP THE SLAUGHTER OF THE HOLY HANGNAILS!. He went on to sign this one, M Dennis Moore, Traditional Prejudices Coalition.

Here is a portion of Mr. Moore's third argument:

MORALITY SHOULD BE PUBLIC POLICY
My friends, common sense dictates that morality should be enforced by legislation. But not just anybody's "morality". Our religion is right, and our morality is the only morality. Therefore, our beliefs should be law--anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-freedom. It is our sacred duty to interfere in other people's lives. Jesus' commandment to not judge others isn't for us!
AGREE WITH US OR BURN IN HELL!

I freaking love Oregon, and I love my new hero, M Dennis Moore from Traditional Prejudices Coalition & the Special Righteousness Council

10. Someone used the "snakes on a plane" in defense of a measure too.
It was done tongue firmly in cheek as well. I think it is for M45 and iirc, the author is Steven Mauer.

11. His are the top 3! Very funny but I wish the rest of the supporters would
spend as much effort defending Habeas Corpus.

12. Wait, let me get this straight...
People pay to have their arguments in an official voters' pamphlet? That seems wrong.

13. Why?
They make it reasonable - $500. Non-profits can usually gather that much to submit an argument. A group of individual citizens can pool their money and submit an argument.

It is cheap enough to be accessible and expensive enough to limit the number of arguments for each measure. If one doesn't want to plunk down the $500, then they can always write letters to the editor.

Remember too, Oregon is vote-by-mail. Many people use the voters pamphlet to study in the several weeks between the time the ballot arrives in the mail and when it is due back at the county elections office.

14. No one should have to pay to have their views heard about voting...
I guess they're considered ads?

It just seems wrong that whoever can pay gets their say. Although I realize there has to be some way to limit the views because everyone can't fit in a pamphlet.

15. The pamplets are mailed out to every household in Oregon.
This election there are two pamphlets.

LTTE work well too, and are free.

IIRC, the fee used to be $300 but it seems to be $500 now. Some of the arguments come from businesses, some come from former politicians, some come from mayors of various cities, some come from citizens and some come from groups of school teachers. Split a whole bunch of ways, that $500 isn't likely to be much of a stumbling block.

If one really felt passionate about a measure or a candidate enough to get an argument for or against published, I don't think the $ would be a stumbling block. In the many years that we've had vote by mail, I've never read anything about the cost of submitting an argument to the voters pamphlet.

16. Oregon and Washington rock
..when it comes to satirical politics.

Back when some religious right bigots filed a ballot initiative in Washington to bar gays and lesbians from adopting children. Somebody filed a competing ballot initiative. It was identical in wording to the anti-gay one except that it replaced every instance of "gay and lesbian" with "right-wing fundamentalist christian".
