Bush smokes cigarettes away from the cameras. (Laura too)
A friend of mine knows an aide who works in the White House, and both Shrub Jr. and Laura, he claims, puff down on cigs whenever there isn't news media around.

Laura, I thought, was obvious. (Kitty Dukakis also did, during her husband's '88 campaign)

But the revelation that Bush is a smoker kind of shocked me. Until I remembered that video of Bush drunk after he "quit drinking".

"Nice people. Boring people." Bush, looking like he's blasted at a 1990 party, talking shit about the bride and groom-to-be because they didn't drink or smoke.

Makes sense now...

(Note to Republicans: FIND THE LEAKER!!!)

10. Well Then Your Doctor's An Absolute Moron Who Deserves To Lose His License
He of all people should know the extreme difficulty some have in quitting. He should be the FIRST person to offer sympathy, assistance, education and support to smokers.

The fact he said such a thing, if you are in fact being truthful, just shows that your doctor is an absolutely ignorant jackass that doesn't deserve to be practicing medicine.

44. I understand what you are saying. I have been on and off cigarettes
for years. I have gotten to the point where it is easy for me to quit because I get so damn sick when I don't. But for some reason I end up going back after several weeks or months. People think that I am a social smoker since they see me smoke and then not smoke but the reality is I am a compulsive relapser. Things would be so much easier if I never picked up that first cigarette.

15. Good doctor, but...
...he would have done better to mention that when you were still smoking. ;)

I agree, no actual offense meant to smokers. I considered myself a shit-for-brains when I was smoking. One of the main reasons I quit was how stupid I felt for continuing to do it. I was handing like $2000/yr over to tobacco companies so my wife and I could slowly poison ourselves. I'd rather spend that $2000 on home improvement, CD's, groceries, ANYTHING but cigs.

But if the stuff WE care about doesn't bring him down, maybe we should try to find something that will.

22. You don't think there's a stigma against smoking in the USA?
A 10-second glance at the contents of GD would reveal that the stigma not only exists, but transcends party lines.

Non-smokers usually don't like smokers (except those of us who don't give a shit), and most of the USA is decidedly non-smoking.

A friend of a friend telling you something that you post on DU is not going to affect his poll numbers. Perhaps if the MSM picked it up then his numbers would dip 1%, but most likely it'd still be due to some other dumb thing he's done, and even with that 1% dip, he'd still be our shitty president.

38. Whatever gets the wingnuts to stay home or vote for someone else.
Part of the reason I posted this is because I was hoping someone else could corroborate it.

If it's found that George "I quit everything when I found Jesus" Bush really didn't change his lifestyle all that much (smoking/drinking/drug use/animal fornication/whatever), do you think his religious zealot supporters will buy that he found Jesus at all? Or vote for candidates he supports?

At 100% or 0%, he's still our shitty president. But I'd rather have him as close to 0% as possible going into the 2006 elections.

Like it or not, the approval ratings of presidents do alter downticket races. Does 1994 ring a bell?

I know this from past, personal, experience. Smoking and drinking is sinful, and they crucify their own with "thou shalt nots"!!!

and you'd better believe mainline fundies disapprove of smoking and drinking altogether. You've probably seen that swill they've written on the internet about his being such a fine Christian President, who was sent by God.....

They would absolutely flip out seeing a photo of him with a cig hanging outta his purty mouth, after all the hard work he and his handlers have gone to to create a pious image of him.

The idea of a drunk with his finger on the button unnerves me. Particularly since the last pill-popping drunk to inhabit the White House was Richard Nixon.

Frankly. I do not care if the Chimp and Pickles is puffing away. I am sure we have had quite a few Presidents in our past that smoked. Ford with his pipe, Kennedy and his cigars, FDR and his cigarettes. I also think Johnson smoked a pack or two a day. It would be wonderful to see a non-smoker President in the future though. It would set a better example but we have more pressing issues to deal with than Bush's other bad habits.

60. In 2001 one of the first things * did was eliminate WH no-smoking rule
Can't find a link (it happened as soon has he moved in), but I did find this:

The President’s Recommendations for Avoiding Risky Behaviors

The President’s Challenge:

Healthy choices are about making smart decisions in your everyday life—from avoiding tobacco and illegal drugs, to moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages if you drink, to using safety belts and bike helmets. Every little bit of effort counts:

< snip >

If you smoke, quit. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. After just one day without cigarettes, the risk for heart attack decreases. Over the next several months, coughing, sinus congestion, and fatigue decrease. One year after quitting, excess risk for heart disease is reduced by half; risk for stroke is reduced after five years of not smoking. Ten years after quitting, the lung cancer death rate is about half that of a smoker; 15 years after quitting, an ex-smoker’s risk for heart disease is about the same as that of a nonsmoker.

If you are a parent, set a good example and quit smoking before your children start. If you continue to smoke, avoid smoking inside or around your children. Each year an estimated 3,000 nonsmoking Americans die of lung cancer and up to 300,000 children suffer from respiratory tract infections because of exposure to secondhand smoke. Evidence also indicates that exposure to secondhand smoke causes heart disease.

You know that no prison in the United States allows its inmates to either drink or smoke, right?

And you also know that Bush is probably going to be in one sometime in the next five years.

For extra entertainment...he's gone from being the most powerful man in the world to being in General Population...and he can't have either a drink or a smoke? They'll have to slap him in Solitary so the rest of the inmates can get some sleep.
