"You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes
you get what you need."

Mike Webb, on his show tonight, played a number of Stones songs, as well as other stuff. (He is here in Seattle where they did a concert tonight). (Go to http://stream.mikewebb.org:8001/listen.pls for re-runs.) He ended with this one. Like all (almost) of their creations, the ROCKING sound almost obscures the words, and at first glance the words seem unimportant, and maybe they are. But a few lines made me think of the "she" as Nixon-Chimpy Amerikkka. These lines in particular:

"I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands"

Both an admonition to fight and a warning. We thought we killed the Nixon beast, but the undead monster is back again.

Anyway, these are the lyrics. (For those who don't know, "Jimmy" is likely Jimi Hendrix - YOU MUST listen to this if you haven't yet heard his Woodstock guitar tell far more truth than you'll ever see on your TeeVee : http://clanfaw.free.fr/04.mp3 )

I saw her today at a reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she would meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I saw her today at the reception
A glass of wine in her hand
I knew she was gonna meet her connection
At her feet was her footloose man

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you might find
You get what you need

Oh yeah, hey hey hey, oh...

And I went down to the demonstration
To get my fair share of abuse
Singing, "We're gonna vent our frustration
If we don't we're gonna blow a 50-amp fuse"
Sing it to me now...

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes well you just might find
You get what you need
Oh baby, yeah, yeah!

I went down to the Chelsea drugstore
To get your prescription filled
I was standing in line with Mr. Jimmy
And man, did he look pretty ill
We decided that we would have a soda
My favorite flavor, cherry red
I sung my song to Mr. Jimmy
Yeah, and he said one word to me, and that was "dead"
I said to him

You can't always get what you want, no!
You can't always get what you want (tell ya baby)
You can't always get what you want (no)
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You get what you need
Oh yes! Woo!

You get what you need--yeah, oh baby!
Oh yeah!

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

You can't always get what you want (no, no baby)
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need, ah yes...

1. I was home on leave and listening to that very song when
the cops kicked in the doors (Bay City, Texas) and took us all to jail.

Everybody but me went to prison.

I went back to Viet Nam.

My friends got the cleaner end of the stick.

Tom

2. There's a flashback! Music does that.
I was luckier than you (exempt) and got tossed into the can only once, briefly. (And I had a German Shepard launched at me. I like and trust dogs and was no threat to the cop - or the dog. And the dog was smarter than the handler and did not bite - just a shove.)

But the thing this broadcast reminded of was how free the media were to carry popular protest messages in music, and how they helped build the whole movement.

3. It is up to us to build the movement without any help from any media.
We must be the media period. People don't know what habeas corpus means to them, so I guess they are safe. LOL

5. By the "they" who helped, I meant the artists.
Not the media, but at that time they (the media) were less concentrated and thus free to just play whatever bribes or ratings or the relatively autonomous DJ's liked. The artists still play that role today, but the highly concentrated corporate media now deliberately suppress their voices. You are right, we need to become our own media. Youtube offers that possbility, and sites like http://www.benfrank.net/nuke/Free_Peace_mp3s.html (Burn your own CDs) offer another way to do this.
