Republican Ad Calls Black Women "Ho's" (Huffington Post)
Republican Ad Calls Black Women "Ho's" (1 comments )
READ MORE: Intelligent Design
No one can criticize the GOP for failing to produce sophisticated propaganda that successfully exploits the hopes and fears of white middle Americans. But can the right-wing distraction factory woo minorities with the same techniques? Check out the following transcript of a new Republican ad targeting black voters in 10 battleground states this year and you be the judge:
BLACK MAN #1: "If you make a little mistake with one of your 'hos,' you'll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked."

BLACK MAN #2: "That's too cold. I don't snuff my own seed."

BLACK MAN #1: "Maybe you do have a reason to vote Republican."
This ad was financed by J. Patrick Rooney, a white billionaire notorious for funding several misleading anti-Kerry ads that ran on urban radio stations in 2004. The money for Rooney's newest ad flowed through a little-known group called America's PAC, which was founded by Richard Nadler, a veteran Republican consultant who pushed Intelligent Design in Kansas public schools, declaring, "Darwin is bunk."

J. Patrick Rooney

From SourceWatch
Rooney is the former chairman of Golden Rule Insurance Co. and recently founded Medical Savings Insurance Co. which specializes in the health savings accounts created out of the President's 2003 prescription drug plan, according to the Washington Post , which first reported on Rooney's backing for People of Color United. He has provided approximately half the funding for the group which is running misleading ads on African American radio stations. The ads are anti-Kerry, go figure.

News: Golden Rule Insurance has lavished campaign funds on Gingrich and the GOP in order to promote its medical savings account scheme--and destroy Medicare.

By Robert Dreyfuss and Peter H. Stone

January/February 1996 Issue

Deep inside the gleaming, lakeside Indianapolis headquarters of Golden Rule Insurance Co., the elevator doors open with a swoosh and a worried-looking man in a trench coat hurries in. "Trouble in Washington," he says to a colleague, with the air of someone who has seen Washington trouble before. "We're in pretty good shape in the House, but the Senate's giving us some problems. Gotta work on them, gotta work on the Senate." The man is Darrell Richey, general counsel at the billion-dollar insurer. And today Richey is very concerned about the fate of a few provisions in the Medicare bill before Congress--provisions that could mean tens of millions of dollars to Golden Rule's bottom line.

As the GOP's plan to dismantle Medicare has moved forward, no other corporation has lobbied as effectively, nor positioned itself as well to reap big dividends from the Republican legislation, as Golden Rule. While doctors, hospitals, drugmakers, and other, larger insurers are going to garner pieces of the Medicare carcass, the relatively obscure Midwestern company--thanks to its unique alliance with the Republican leadership and a network of far-right think tanks and industry groups--is poised to gain a disproportionate chunk.

Golden Rule is an intensely political company, from its patriarchal chairman, J. Patrick Rooney, down to its most junior employee. Behind the fresh-scrubbed, Midwestern faces of Golden Rule's workers lies a hard-edged, ideological fervor whose tone is set by Rooney's own libertarian, free-market views. For years, the company has been known for its unusually aggressive underwriting policies and its battles against regulators and insurance reform legislation in states across the country.

Since the start of the decade, Golden Rule has funneled a staggering amount of cash into the GOP's campaign coffers--including nearly $1 million in the last election cycle alone--to win hearts and minds for Rooney's pet project, Medical Savings Accounts, a kind of medical IRA that heavily benefits the healthy and affluent. Rooney himself has led Golden Rule's political and free-market jihad in Washington, jetting to the capital almost weekly for meetings with key members of Congress--including House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the top recipient of Golden Rule's largesse.

If he hadn't already told me that he was voting for Dems, I would given a true education on abortion and what women face.

119. Voice of some of the ads: Herman Cain
Mr. Rooney declined to be interviewed yesterday. The group referred calls from The New York Sun to a conservative, African-American talk show host who voiced some of the ads, Herman Cain.

Mr. Cain, who once managed the Godfather's Pizza chain and ran unsuccessfully for the Senate from Georgia in 2004, said he was not troubled that Mr. Rooney, who is white, is funding ads using black voices who claim to speak on behalf of the black community."You don't have a lot of black billionaires who would want to fund something like this," he said.

Yes, Mr. Cain; indeed we do think YOU are stupid.

43. This ad seems to target men though...
What about the fact that these 'ho' women might want to have an abortion and don't care about this 'pimp' who uses semi-sophisticated language to sound better or something? The add is horrible and then atop of it, it's so stupidly aimed toward men, who don't get pregnant and shouldn't really be in direct issue unless they are married to that 'ho' who would then be 'wife' or I'm sure in this commercial at least be promotied to 'hobag' or some other derogatory term since obviously women aren't worthy of respect in this demeaning ad toward blacks.

22. Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case...
>>"This is so dirty, but it works," a sociology professor at Indiana University, Johnnie Griffin, said. "These are race ads. It's incredible."

While Ms. Griffin said she felt insulted by the ads, she also said a student in her class reported that a relative was thinking of switching to the Republican Party because of them. "Black people are more conservative than anybody thinks. We do have strong family values that people don't seem to stress as much," the professor said.<<

but those would be the same blacks who would probably not want to use the slang "ho's" in public.

And really, I mean, nobody WANTS to abort, I guess--but what intelligent people DO want is to be sure the powers-that-be can't give them orders when it comes to their own personal reproduction or non-reproduction.

"It'll turn off every black voter who hears it." Apparently not, according to the article.

Personally, I find them disgusting, condescending, and a whole bunch of other negative things - AND I think that on average they will backfire. My point was only that it apparently is not turning off every black voter. There will be the occasional Thomas, Rice, etc. who hates themselves enough to buy into it.

Umm, believe me, this is the exception that does not make the rule. This ad will turn off, and piss off as it has with me, 99 percent of black voters. You can go find a Johnnie Griffin or some other professor to say the opposite anytime, just as you can find an Armstrong Williams to be a whore for you on Faux, but that doesn't make it true. That whole assertion is complete bullshit.
And the story is from the New York Sun? That should have been a big enough detour sign in and of itself!

and you find this gem

""I can understand why a Ku Klux Klan cracker like David Duke makes nice with the terrorists,"a male voice in the ad says. "What I want to know is why so many of the Democrat politicians I helped elect are on the same side of the Iraq war as David Duke."""

well, in concers to David Duke, how does that saying go, even a broken clock is right 2 times a day....

then on page 4

"Asked why he supports the group, Mr. Flanigan said, "I think it's unfortunate that some 90% of African Americans vote Democratic … Rooney has had some success in moving African-American votes.""

Well I think it's unfortunate that ANYONE votes Republican....

snuff = kill

seed = the life he has planted, progeny

so essentially it's, "I don't kill my own offspring", in response to the other guy suggesting that if he gets one of his lady friends knocked up ("making a mistake with one of his hos), he's going to want get that problem taken care of right away (i.e. abortion)... and the use of "cold" = unfeeling, detatched

Abortion is the decision of the woman, or "ho" in this case, and it's not 'snuffing' anything except an obvious injustice since she is entirely dependent on her pimp.

Really, the entire scenario is so wacky. It sounds like something that MAD TV would come up with to lampoon efforts to recruit Black Republicans.

I hope this is discussed tonight on "News and Notes", the fine NPR show produced by the African-American Radio Consortium. The ad is so obnoxious that it's actually hilarious. I'm sure it will convince successful, caring pimps who embrace "family-values" to run right out and vote for such fine Republicans as George Allen and Rick Sanitorium. Good grief...This is so trippy I am seriously ROTFLMAO. Unnnnnnnbelievable.

They'll use FlyGuy's poem from "I'm Gonna Get you Sucka" for a future Rooney ad regarding Social Security "reform."

81. They are really getting desperate now...
Since they want black women to have the babies, why do they do everything in their power to stop them from taking care of them. Once the babies arrive, they make it their business to stigmatize them and set up policies that cause more problems in the long run. Why do they not want to hire these black babies when they are old enough to work, why don't they want them to be educated. What in the hell do they expect them to do people will do anything to survive. The racists bastards are showing there true colors now that they are desperate.

88. Omigod, I just realized who Richard Nadler is, mentioned in the OP,
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 10:27 AM by Judi Lynn
as the founder of the group which produced this gem. He's a very short, ugly, lumpy little fat guy who is probably the most hate-filled beastie I've ever seen in a tv political debate. He's on Kansas City's public tv local political show, Ruckus all the time, or used to be, years ago, before I had to stop watching it, due to disgust.

Nadler
This illustration flatters him wildly.
Richard Nadler is president of the nonprofit think tank Americas Majority and co-editor of Daily Dispatch, "a military blog reporting on events in Iraq." <1> (http://www.iri.org/pdfs/05-22-06-The%20Word%20on%20the%20Street%20%20By%20Richard%20Nadler.pdf)<2> (http://www.amermaj.com/presidents_page.html)

Americas Majority, headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas, is a 501(c)(4) policy group "founded to increase the constituency for conservative causes: free market economics, international anti-totalitarianism, and morals based on Jewish and Christian scriptures," its website states. <3> (http://www.amermaj.com/)

Rich Nadler, according to an April 6, 2006, article (http://www.pitch.com/Issues/2006-04-06/news/strip.html) in The Pitch by Eric Barton, is a Kansas City "conservative pundit" who "runs an activist group called Americas Majority".

Barton noted that the "last time this newspaper reported on Nadler's activities, it was in a story about how he had produced some phone-bank messages urging African-Americans to vote Republican during the November 2002 elections <"Black Tuesday," December 12, 2002>. That story also noted that Nadler had produced TV ads two years earlier for a group called the Republican Ideas Political Committee. The spots featured a woman complaining that her son's violent, drug-infested public school offered 'a bit more diversity than {she}could handle.' The ads were labeled racist by such noted liberals as then-Sen. John Ashcroft." <4> (http://www.pitch.com/Issues/2006-04-06/news/strip.html)
(snip/...)
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Richard_Nadler#Americas_PAC

(I have seen the ad mentioned above, and it would make you vomit. The voice intoning "a bit more diversity than {she} could handle" is drippppping with snotty wink-wink, nudge-nudge insinuation, so you will for sure understand it's a loaded comment.)

156. This connects to something I was looking at yesterday.
The name J. Patrick Rooney rang a bell. Then I noticed that your picture of Rooney is from here: http://www.fairnessfoundation.org. Rooney is the founder of the Fairness Foundation.
The Fairness Foundation was founded in 1998 to assist low income children in getting access to better education and to assist the uninsured in getting good health care.

Sounds great doesn't it? Well, there are some problems...

I ran into the Fairness Foundation while researching something yesterday.

See my post in this other thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2889749#2890348

The Fairness Foundation is the registrant of the domain REPUBLICANLEADERSHIP.ORG which belongs to a K Street organization called the "Republican Leadership Coalition" which may be responsible for another series of ads that claim that it's been proven that WMDs did exist and were moved out of Iraq and into Syria.

If you read my post you'll see that I also ran into the medical savings accounts idea. A company called "Medical Savings Health Plan" has the same street address as the Fairness Foundation. It's website is at http://medicalsavings.com/.

Medical savings accounts seem to be one of Bush's pet ideas (a very bad idea IMHO) for supposedly solving the health care crisis, and a company like "Medical Savings Health Plan" would benefit greatly from it. It looks like this may be the real agenda behind both sets of ads - keep the Repubs in power so they can push employers to switch from health insurance to medical savings accounts thus financially benefiting Rooney.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1720799/posts#comment?q=1

Sorry it took so long, but I had to take a shower when I returned. Hmmm. It is not so unanimous. Maybe they are less rigid than we think.

Let's see what workerbee has to say:

This is so dirty, but it works," a sociology professor at Indiana University, Johnnie Griffin, said. "These are race ads. It's incredible."

Cuz everybody knows only Dems are allowed to use race for political purposes!

While Ms. Griffin said she felt insulted by the ads, she also said a student in her class reported that a relative was thinking of switching to the Republican Party because of them. "Black people are more conservative than anybody thinks. We do have strong family values that people don't seem to stress as much," the professor said.

If they're so conservative, why do 95%+ continue to vote Dem? There can be two reasons. One is that they really aren't conservative. The other is that they're too stupid and/or lazy to realize that they habitually vote against their own self-interest.

Well, that certainly is harsh. But what about a critical view of the ad. For that we can turn to To Hell With Poverty who writes

It's a great idea, but the dialog's a little weird:

""If you make a little mistake with one of your ‘hos,' you'll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked," one of the men says.

"That's too cold. I don't snuff my own seed," the other replies.

"Maybe you do have a reason to vote Republican," the first man says."

I mean, who mixes "ho's" and "tout suite" in the same sentence??? Anyway good luck to them.

Actually, of the 16 or so comments, these were the only two I could decipher. The others all seem to be speaking in tongues today.

183. Yes, white men in blackface is one of the
first things I thought of when reading this insufferably insulting piece of shit! This is exactly the kind of thing they would, and quite often did, do. I simply cannot believe it's still going on in the 21st-century.

I've NEVER known ANY blacks who talk like that, EVER. Not any of my black friends, or co-workers past and present, or any of my parents' black friends and co-workers past and present, or any of my black classmates; NONE. That's because this is nothing more than what racist, clueless old whites THINK they say, with the aid of self-hating blacks like Herman Cain (one of my mom's black friends had a special word for blacks like Cain, Thomas, Rice, etc., which is unrepeatable, lol).

178. Geebus chrisp....do they actually -
They think this will work with the Black demographic? I mean do they really honestly believe that they ALL call women 'ho's and talk like trash? This is not only racist but very much insulting. I find it offensive, degrading and I am a white woman. This is TARGETED?? To the black demographic? I would fire the idiot who though THIS was a brilliant ad campaign.

I cannot imagine how the black community feels about ad's like this. If the republican's want to show how far they are removed from minority groups, the poor and the working poor in this country, ads like this one just put a glaring spot light on it.

Is it any wonder that blacks vote Dem more often than not? And to be honest, Dem's are not fully off the hook, that party has its own fair share of racists amongst them as well - they usually do not wear a neon sign announcing it though!

I wish it was possible to clear out all 3 main branches of Federal Government and install an entire new, uncorrupted group in there. They would not be Rep or Dem, but from a mix of all other progressive political parties.

Do I vote Dem? Yes, however, if there were more independents making it to the final election's besides just rep vs dem. I would choose the independent (as long as I believed in what they 'say' they stand for and have a proven track record). But we all know that will not happen anytime soon, so I am a registered voting Democrat. Because for all the faults the Democrats have, they are still thousands of times better in office (with a proven track record of improving this country!) than any Rethuglican.

/rant off
Ya know, I have been a part of DU's lurking ground since 2002, registered early 2003. I have seen the flux from Moderate Dem to OMG "loony liberals" do exist! (and no I am not calling everyone here loony liberal, that would mean I was one too lol and my husband hehe)

The ads that the Rethugs are coming out with lately to me shows how desperate a party they are. I thought they were desperate with the whole 'swift boat' thing, but ads like this just take the cake!!
Cheers
Sandy (wearing her flame retardant suit, fyi!)

PS/OT:

I had a small Iraq the vote party on Saturday - We all enjoyed watching the film Iraq for sale, as sickening as it is, it was rather well done, my only complaint is it wasn't long enough - there is so much MORE info that needs to come out, I hope this video makes it to some main stream TV (obviously, not network though), even Discovery channel would be great!

Those that could not make it to my place for the film showing, I have lent the video out to. We also did our phone call duty and continue to do so! The big plan though is to have a huge celebraton dinner (hopefully) the night after November's elections. Of course, we will be celebrating, even if we can't get the scum out of FL but really all we want is to get the mojority seats in both the houses! 2006 is so much more important than 2008 (personally) But here is to hoping (and being active about acheiving) we get a great president in '08 too!!

180. Yep, the ad is insulting to everyone other than right-wingers.
They are really ugly people, who ALWAYS attempt to claim superiority, in order to have a foot to stand on while striking out at everyone else.

You've never seen crap like this from normal people!

The man who actually created this monstrosity has done other filthy ads, but this seems to be the worst. One he did in the last election cycle had a woman viciously implying integrated schools are too violent and dangerous for her white kids.

He lives in a suburb of Kansas City. His name is Rich Nadler. He looks like a large, ugly, sloppy, pasty white, moist, smelly, lumpy old cancer wearing a suit. He crabs and bitches and sneers and insinuates when he is asked to participate in political tv discussions, off in his own little hate-infested world, almost like Gollum, from the Ring Trilogy. I don't know how anyone can stand to either look or listen to him. He's totally diseased.

It was startling learning he had picked up a man willing to bankroll his ads nationally. It should tell you there are some very underhanded, destructive people in movement across the country.

181. Anyone to have the audacity to characterize black women as "hos",
regardless of the terms currency in "hardcore" rap and street vernacular is a fairly warped individual.

No, je m'ajuste, a very warped individual. I taught black studens nearly exclusively for two years at Alabama State, and cannot imagine any of the young women in my sound or sight range being tolerated called that by anyone, and most certainly if my lily white Irish ass heard it.

Does this individual not recognize how demeaning that term is? What a perversion of black culture and black women's struggle?

Dispicable. Disgusting. The lowest form of bait one could possibly take and one that will backfire as well!

I hope that he is surrounded by a group of angry "hos" who take their nails and teeth to him. If he thinks black women are "hos," then maybe they should act like an enraged ho brigade...but then again, most black women would be above that, since they by and large enbody the personification of dignity.

of this thread are mostly for Golden Rule Insurance? LOL, talk about irony!

190. Differences Among Groups Should Not Confuse Too Much
This article should demonstrate that every communtiy and
ethnicity has divisions in it, and disagreements as well.
One should remember the wealthy are not, with few
exceptions, going to stop their attack. They never mention
the work that is done by rank and file that provides them with
their wealth in the first place; and the discrimination they
have in deciding who they employ in their businesses.
As the money piles up into the hands of the privileged,
they will try to restrict opposition to their control of
power. This always includes the threat of war to keep their
system going.
A Democratic victory will likely only slow this process a
little. We need to figure out ways to sustain, defend, and
hopefully turn around the situation of our life. Good Luck.
