So have we gone from 2 or 3 killed every day to 10 or 11? Is this the new normal? Are these the last throes?

1. The 2 or 3 is the average
when spread out over the year (800-1000 KIA), on any one day or at any one event you can get 10 poor bastards riding in a 7ton killed by an IED.

2. Where are you getting 11?
The Iraqi casualty site lists only 2 for yesterday. 10 for the day before yesterday.

3. I think you're confusing Tuesday and Wednesday
You are right that casualty totals have spiked upwards, but you are mistaken about the number for yesterday. There were 10 on Tuesday and 2 yesterday. In addition there were 6 KIA on Sunday and 7 on Monday.

4. Am I reading it wrong?
Or is the article wrong?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Eleven more U.S. troops were slain in combat, the military said Wednesday...

Why do they put the word "more" there?

6 were killed Sunday, 7 on Monday and 10 more on Tuesday. The report of the casualties for Tuesday was made on Wednesday, as is typical.

If you read through the entire article, it states: "The latest American death took place Wednesday, when a soldier was killed after his patrol was attacked with small-arms fire south of Baghdad. Ten Americans were killed on Tuesday — nine soldiers and a Marine — the highest single-day combat death toll for U.S. forces since Jan. 5, when 11 service members were killed across Iraq. There have been days with a higher number of U.S. deaths, but not solely from combat."

5. Skipping past the date confusion, I hear it's better IED's
Everyone in a vehicle is dying in some of these incidents rather than just a single person.
