If a nation values anything more than freedom it will lose its freedom

"If a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom, and the irony of it is that if it is comfort or money that it values more, it will lose that too." -- William Somerset Maugham

Logic check: Winning the permanent (and therefore unwinnable) war on terrorism requires sacrificing our freedoms. So, they think they've found something more important than freedom and liberty.

"Dictatorship comes about easily because it's core consists of a "better" idea, *enforced* as against the weaker, the irresponsible, or the dangerous ideas that freedom (in the mind of the wannabe rulers) would so weakly and unwisely "tolerate." It's a "refuse to lose" mentality where a country competes with itself to sacrifice everything in the interest of pyrrhic victory."
