there is going to be a "silent protest" at Keystone College... there was no mention if this protest was going to be anywhere near where bush could see it or if they will be corraled into a free-silent speech zone

the report also mentioned that in '04 Sherwood's district (:P mine) voted for bush..., and up until this year Sherwood had carved out a "safe district"

at the moment - Sherwood is running the "Forgive me-vote for me" commercials

his wife sent out a letter to the party choir members saying "I forgive him, why don't you. Please vote for my hubby. This is not a politically motivated letter" letter...

in honor of CHARACTER COUNTS week - bush forgives him too.

meanwhile - Sherwood aka "the Choker" is running behind - Carney is kicking butt. Sherwood is blaming it on character attacks....it's not his fault. So far he hasn't said he has a drinking problem or was abused by a priest or cited any vast librul conspriacy organized by "grumpy" (see beetwasher's posting about Weldon's new "proof" http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2432237 )

for those not familiar with Sherwood's antics - briefly:

He had a 5 year affair with a woman 35 years his junior. It ended with a 911 call to the police whre the woman said Sherwood choked her. Then the mistress sued him for I think $5million - but it was quickly settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Sherwood does admit to the affair, but says he didn't choke.

He's been in the House since '99.

8. I have a bunch of relatives in that area. What's he
doing there? Campaigning for Santorum or some other crook? That's a reasonably Democratic area, isn't it? I know he made several trips there in 04. My elderly uncle commented at the time that they had to bus crowds in from elsewhere because the locals all know he's an ass.

12. The values pResident is going in for this Piece of Crap
I guess choking your girlfriend while cheating on your wife is a family value because this is the man the pResident is going to stump for today. Things are pretty desperate. I guess from the Republican perspective, at least Sherwood likes girls

In PA-10, Sherwood Faces Possible Defeat
In Pennsylvania's 10th congressional district, a new Lycoming College poll shows Chris Carney (D) leading Rep. Don Sherwood (R-PA) 46.7% to 38.2%.

"The only other independent, non-partisan poll of the race, taken in late August, showed Carney ahead by seven points."

Though Sherwood is the congressman who was accused of choking his girlfriend -- and later apologized to his wife and family -- President Bush will be campaigning for him later this month.

10. Several years ago
We stayed at a really neat inn near Altoona, I think it was called the 19th Hole. What an incredibly comfortable place to stay. I recall on Friday afternoon they had Happy Hour then after about two hours they started putting placards on the tables advertising special room rates.

11. Probably returned because the Kirby Center in WB was packed when
he went there to campaign in 2004. If memory serves, WB and PA went for Kerry.

I doubt he'll see that at least every other store on Main Street is vacant. Even the pawn shop went out of business.

35. As I mentioned upthread, my elderly uncle
who lives in the area said the repukes had to bus people in back on 04, because chimnp is so despised locally. Many, many retired people there who live on Social Security and remember it was the Dems who constructed the social safety net. Bush ought to quit wasting his time and taxpayer money on useless trips like this.

I remember 15 or so years ago flying out of there on a DC9... the wheels came off the runway a precious few seconds before the runway ended... and the terrain dropped a couple hundred feet down the mountain!

25. The main runway at Wilkes-Barre....
..is 4/22 and it is 7501' long, which is probably just within the margin of safety of accelerate stop distance for a 74. The photograph appears to have been taken facing north. Considering the winds at the time of arrival (light and variable to westerly) I suspect that AF-1 used the ILS 22 and taxiied on Bravo to its present position. (It is not out of the question that it may have used the ILS 4 approach and back-taxiied using the turnaround pads at the end of the runway).

That plane is getting more use than a New York taxicab. Is it strictly legal to be using AF1 for campaigning? Seems like a helluva cost to taxpayers (you and me).
Just wondering

Republican Morals and Values: 'I Did Not Choke My Mistress'
http://www.progressivedailybeacon.com/more.php?page=opinion&id=1308
A. Alexander, October 12th, 2006

You know your campaign is in trouble when a headline reads, "Congressman Runs Ad Claiming He Didn't Abuse Mistress." Yet, hot on the heels of Republican Foley's teenage cyber-stalking scandal that was the ad Pennsylvania Republican, Don Sherwood's campaign had to go with. There really is nothing quite like an, "I really didn't choke my mistress" campaign ad to win over the hearts and minds of American voters.

Republicans are after all, the supposed "morals and values" party are they not? Following the Foley scandal an AP-Ipsos poll found that about 50 percent of all voters suddenly viewed the scandal and congressional corruption in general, as being important in deciding how they will vote. It probably won't help Republican Sherwood too much that he has to run an ad claiming he didn't try to kill his mistress. That is just plain sleazy on so many levels.

In essence Sherwood's ad, no matter the content says this: While cheating on my wife and dishonoring my children, I did not wrap my fingers around my mistress' throat and try to kill her. It doesn't exactly scream "family values." And, too, Sherwood, who claims he didn't choke his mistress, paid an out-of-court settlement to his lover for having choked her.

pResidential Visit to Lackawanna County
http://wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=5561895
Thursday, October 19, UPDATED: 1:29 p.m.

President George Bush has arrived at Keystone College in Lackawanna County.

The president and his entourage landed at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport just before 12:45 p.m.

The president was joined on Air Force One with Congressman Don Sherwood and his wife, Carol. After spending a few minutes together aboard, they descended the steps to be greeted by other dignitaries waiting at the bottom of the steps.

The president also greeted Naomi Alamar of Scranton. She was presented with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Alamar is a volunteer with SCOLA Volunteers with Literacy.

-----snip-----

The president is coming here to stump for Republican Congressman Don Sherwood. He will speak at a luncheon at the college. Tickets for the event went for $350 a plate. For people who want their photo taken with the president, the price tag is $2,500. It doubles for couples.

---snip---

The president was met with protestors and supporters as he approached the Keystone campus. The president is expected to be in our area about three hours. Newswatch 16 will bring you complete, live coverage of the visit from the time he arrives to when Air Force One departs later this afternoon.
