Interesting findings: Testosterone and Sexual deviancy
Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 12:09 PM by shance
For what its worth:

Certainly any hormonal imbalance appears to cause some abnormal behavior. It looks like those in our White House and some in Congress have some real out of balance hormonal/testosterone problems, that in turn might be the problem behind the destruction they are creating?

Excerpts:

Besides a general knowledge of the human nervous system and the role of neurotransmitters, social scientists need to know certain concepts about the structure of the brain that impact on such key areas as sexual behavior and measurement.

The reason why dimorphism in the brain is so important is that so many problems of deviancy are particularly attributable to men. Sexual deviation is gender-dependent and not only much more frequent but also much more varied in its manifestations in the male than in the female. Certain deviations such as voyeurism, exhibitionism, homicidal sadism, and fetishism are virtually never encountered in women. Excepting female homosexuality, transsexuality and masochism (yet these last two are still more frequent in men) it is a remarkable fact that sexual deviations occur exclusively in men (Flor-Henry, 1987:50)

But it is not just in the field of deviancy that men have a poorer record than women.

The Y-chromosome itself probably evolved from the X.

Ounsted and Taylor (1972) suggest that the Y-chromosome slows down the growth rate in the male fetus.

This allows more time for genomic information to be transcribed. However, it also means that the male fetus is born relatively more immature compared with the female. This slowing of the growth rate means more health problems for the male than the female. For instance, males have higher rates of perinatal mortality, accidental death, mental handicap (including autism and epilepsy). Later in life males suffer from an increased vulnerability to cardiac disease and certain forms of cancer. To balance the excess male damage and loss 5 percent more males are born than females in the human population. (Goodman, 1987:29)

The development of a male brain involves more processes than that involved in the creation of a female brain and naturally, this increases the possibility of something going wrong (Goodman, 1987:29). {/b]

2. The third sentence of the second paragraph demands challenge.
"Certain deviations such as voyeurism, exhibitionism, homicidal sadism, and fetishism are virtually never encountered in women. Excepting female homosexuality, transsexuality and masochism (yet these last two are still more frequent in men) it is a remarkable fact that sexual deviations occur exclusively in men (Flor-Henry, 1987:50)"

Aside from that this report classifies homosexuality and transsexuality as sexual deviations, I don't believe that these behaviors are exclusive or nearly exclusive to males.

I believe on the real mechanics of our hormones that in a way we have been robbed.

Perhaps that is part of the reason the Bush Administration has declared war on scientists and biologists.

10. "Virtually never" is a problem for me ...
... I think rather than those deviations 'virtually never' happening in women, its more like we tend to ... act out ... deviations in different ways ... maybe more low key <"Gee Timmy, your mom's a real strict bitch!">

Women certainly have been homicidal sadists, (ie, serial torturers/ killers) but it takes the extreme "in your face" case like Eileen Wornous, Andrea Yates or Susan Smith for the media to label a woman as such.

14. I saw that as well and I'm calling bs on it
In fact, I would like to throw it out there that I think MANY women are exhibitionists. Girls Gone Stupid is a prime example. Satin/silk sheets can often be a fetish for women but because it's more subtle, people often overlook it.

Would watching pornography be a type of voyeurism or does the definition state that one must watch others in person? Either way, women are voyeurs too.

Obviously this author doesn't watch as many episodes on HBO of Real Sex as I do. :D

28. Exhibitionism is definitely found in women
One of the most amusing examples was when I was a college student acting in plays, and one of my fellow cast members came to a rehearsal, took off her coat, and said loudly, "I can't believe what I just did." No one answered, so she went on, "Silly me, I put on a black bra under a white shirt. Just look!"

More blatant, and in the cast of the same play, was a young woman who sat in the make-up area backstage, telling everyone how she had picked up somebody so she could get her "Valentine's Day fuck" and how she had worn the young man out.

At least verbal exhibitionism is alive and well in the female half of the human race.

25. They're deviations only because they occur in a minority
of the population. Blue eyes and blonde hair are physical deviations.

That's what you have to realize about dense, scientific jargon. The words don't mean what you think they do much of the time.

The Soviet military also believed in quantity over quality. Therefore, I do believe the researchers are trying to say that all men are communist.

However hormones contribute to our behavior.

Some hormonal changes/imbalances in this case testosterone, can be potentially dangerous because they stand to potentially harm others if there is too much testosterone being released.

I think it warrants some exploration.

I read the article twice and I still can't figure out if they are trying to say that sexual deviancy is caused by too much or too little testosterone. But a neurologist, I'm not.

9. For many years estrogen levels have been regulated by
OB/GYN doctors because of possible "imbalances" affecting, cycles, mood swings, etc. Doctors don't think twice about regulating estrogen if it positively affects the patient.

Overproduction of testosterone is CLEARLY linked to violent behavior, and I don't know about sexual deviance. However, I've often thought that violent men who constantly commit crimes should absolutely be candidates for some kind of testosterone "balancing" treatment. If it works for women, it can work for men. And the world would be a safer place for it.

15. Would castration of all U.S. congressmen be an option?
During the reigns of various imperial dynasties <Chinese, ancient Egypt, India, etc.> eunuchs were typically placed in positions as civil servants and government bureaucrats. I think republican politicians should break the ice on this one.

<snip>
A eunuch can be either a castrated man or, in ancient terms, any man who is impotent with women for a wide variety of reasons. The earliest records for intentional castration to produce eunuchs are from the Sumerian city of Lagash in the 21st century BC. Over the millennia since, they have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures such as courtiers or equivalent domestics, treble singers, religious specialists, government officials, military commanders, and guardians of women or harem servants. They often served as male prostitutes to other men and were commonly known to engage in homosexual behavior and crossdressing.<More>

Edited on Thu Oct-19-06 12:49 PM by shance
Seriously, would that help?

Like some abbreviated dosage?

I have little idea about hormonal replacements, but it would seem whatever balances someone and makes us feel better and more 'even', then that would make most sense.

Just thinking out loud here.

I can imagine the responses......***

I always thought women were the complex ones. Us guys are relatively simple; a blowjob, a sixpack and some gasoline powered toys will make most of us pretty happy. :D

Excuse me, time for my testosterone supplement.

21. Do people assume a woman only sexually deviates when pressured?
I have nothing to back up what I'm about to say but it seems to me that people tend to discount the full spectrum of a woman's sexuality because when things gets "weird" or "freaky" then it is assumed that her boyfriend/husband pressures her into it or that she was raped as a child.

Obviously situations such as child molestation or forced performance is nothing to make light of and should be taken extremely seriously but why can't we women sexually deviate from the norm without it being assumed that we are or were abused in some way? This study is making a lot assumptions about what women do/don't do and that bothers me. Sexuality can't be as simple as stating that testosterone makes people do different things. It's not fair to either sex to say such things.

23. Hmmm....nature or nurture?
genetically predisposed or environmental stimuli?

It is interesting to note that in the anorexia section, he attributes it to an hormonal imbalance as well, but then blames the fashion industry: so nature and nurture both.

What of cultures throughout history who have used rape as a method of warfare. The current situation in Darfour, for example...women raped by soldiers in front of their children. Are these acts more a result of the social environment, or are the soldiers genetically predisposed to commit the acts, or both?

32. People will inflict abuse on others for different reasons in different
environments.

One of the most difficult things to comprehend is many people who abuse others who are helpless, merely because they can. To relieve stress. Because others are doing it. Because they are sadistic and like hurting others.

Then you remove them from that environment and they will be ashamed they behaved in such a manner.

People will do what feels good to them. Science appears to reveal that too much testosterone in a person can take feeling good to a whole other level, including watching and inflicting pain and suffering onto others and/or worse.

Edited on Sat Oct-21-06 02:02 AM by shance
and invites a potential to be abused.

It is obviously to any thinking human it is not a sadistic act.

ON the contrary, it is a MASOCHISTIC act. An act of potential self harm to oneself.

Of course "acting like a whore" is subjective, and any nut can accuse someone of acting like a whore merely to blame a potential victim.
