1. Keeping 1998 in Mind
I'm not ready to add the "hell" just yet. The GOP was talking 30-seat pickups as well. Hope the polls are good predictors of reality.

2. I don't think the GOP was looking at polls in 1998, just common wisdom
And common wisdom is that the minority party wins big in the sixth year of a president's reign. They lost because of the impeachment witch hunt. There is no witch hunt now, and a plethora of scandals are going to drive Dems to the polls.

6. That's a Good Point
I had forgotten the details and what the polls showed or didn't show.

I just know that:
-People are embarrassed to admit they're Republican these days,
-Despite being reluctant to fess up to pollsters, people on both sides sometimes hold their noses and vote the same as always,
-Foreign policy usually isn't what decides elections, and
-On election day, there is often a swing back towards the incumbent.
Add to that the registration purges in various states, which will serve to suppress the Democratic vote.

All those make me a little nervous about accepting the polls at face value. But the closer we get to election day, the better things look.

4. No.
The corporate press and machines will make sure of that.

5. I believe they'll take the House
But I think Diebold will prevent them from taking the Senate.
