Doolittle backed suspect
He was a character witness in 1987 for a dentist accused of molesting patients.

Rep. John Doolittle, R-Roseville, has attacked the American Civil Liberties Union for "aiding and abetting" sexual predators.
But his testimony in a 1987 court case may have helped acquit a Citrus Heights dentist of sexual battery -- a charge that resurfaced seven years later, costing him a year in jail and his license to practice.

In the 1987 trial, Doolittle was one of a half-dozen or so character witnesses called by Phipps, according to Phipps' attorney at the time, Mark S. Sands.
According to a transcript of Doolittle's remarks, his only comment was to say that the dentist was a friend he had known for three years.
"I consider him to be a very truthful individual," Doolittle said of Phipps.

But Sands said Doolittle, by virtue of his position as a state senator, was the most prominent of the character witnesses.
