(Disclaimer: I know you lovely DUers aren't afraid; this is for the 30-40 percent of people who are just (finally!) starting to wake up)
Stand up America and Stop Being Afraid
Stand up America and stop being afraid. You have been jumping at your own shadow for five long years now, and you've forgotten how brave you once were. George W. Bush has been playing you for a fool, manipulating you with guilt and fear and patriotic platitudes while stealing from you your treasure, your courage, your optimism, and possibly your children’s futures.
You have lost your curiosity and ability to reason, giving Bush the power to control your very thoughts almost--an easy sacrifice, it had seemed, since he promised you safety from “terrorists that want to kill your families.” You have traded your courage and autonomy for this so-called safety, and in return, have endured a constant barrage of threats and terror alerts that has done nothing but scare you into supporting the Bush administration in anything it has wanted to do.
It is time to learn the lessons of 9/11 and move on, not to deny the horror of that day and the loss of those loved ones, but to honor it, and them. You have always been a resourceful, resilient people, able to learn from mistakes, make adjustments, and move on. You have been stuck in fear and confusion too long, unable to find your way out of the dark shadows of spin and paranoia and perpetual war.
You must begin to think again, to question, to ask why people might hate you enough to want to kill you. You must determine to discover and understand their grievances so a productive dialog can finally begin. You must determine to finally learn your history so you can learn how not to repeat it. You must determine to learn more about the world in which you live, the people who share it with you.
Yes, almost 3,000 innocent people died that terrible day, their lives stolen in a brazen display of violence, their families and friends left stunned and broken-hearted. But you cannot bring those people back, or honor them, by destroying many thousands of innocent lives in other parts of the world, sacrificing thousands of your soldiers, or by giving up the very freedoms that had always made America a shining destination and inspiration in the world.
People die in brazen displays of violence all over the world every day, people who also leave stunned and brokenhearted loved ones behind. In Darfur, in Palestine, in Afghanistan, in Iraq; in Indonesia and Tibet, in India and East Timor and Haiti: All over the world, every day, people are killed in large numbers and small, killed by missiles and crashing planes and sniper bullets and hurricanes, by rampaging militias and tsunamis and suicide bombers. The horror of sudden, violent death isn’t new or even unusual. The difference on 9/11 was that it happened on American soil. That day the illusion was shattered forever that America was safe from such terrible acts, that America was somehow protected from such horrific violence.
Stand up America and stop being afraid. The War on Terror is a smokescreen and a diversion, meant to hide what these people are really doing: plundering the national treasure of any country they can get a foothold in, including your own. Yes, there is danger in the world, but you don't lessen it by perpetuating it; you cannot create peace through war. It is time to take back your country from the war-mongering, thieving criminals who lied their way into power and continue to lie and use fear to control you.
Stand up America and stop being afraid. It’s time to admit you have been used by people who manipulated you for their own power and personal and political gain. You must go to the polls in record numbers on November 7 and do your sacred, civic duty to begin to right the wrongs that you’ve allowed these people to perpetrate in your name. You must vote for Democrats in such numbers that the elections cannot be stolen, not this time--and not ever again. You must bring your government back into the kind of balance that your founding fathers envisioned all those years ago.
Stand up America and stop being afraid. You come from a long line of patriots, people who would never have been fooled or intimidated by the likes of George W. Bush. It’s time to cast aside the fear and confusion, and cast your votes for sanity and compassion again, for a country governed by the honest rule of law.
It’s time to stand up and be America again, awake and unfraid. :patriot:
