Denmark has it right
Go after the industries not the citizens!! And when you go after the corporations whey WHINE and fuss like little corrupted piggies that they can't harm people and profit off of it in Denmark.Oive .r al being ot a humanafter all a corporation isn'ike Denmaerk,f only WE would have the guts to smack down corporate thugs like Denmark.Remember corporations are fictional entities, not even alive and they are not affected by the poisons they peddle like a human being is.I think corporate personhood is the biggest stupidist thing ever invented.

When faced with the prospect of a trans fat ban, industries typically rebel. Other countries in the European Union initially objected to Denmark’s ban, arguing it would be economically unfair since their foods could not be legally imported into Denmark.

The first attempts were disastrous. The trans fat-free margarines melted too soon, destroying the flakiness of the 81-layered pastries.

“Everything was flat,” Stagetorn said. Luckily, the problem was solved by switching margarine suppliers.

Customers like Anne Petersen haven’t noticed.

The pastries “taste just as good as they always did,” said the 59-year-old sales assistant, who favors the raspberry version. “If it wasn’t for the law, I never would have known that there wasn’t any trans fat.”Stender and other health experts say Denmark’s trans fat ban should be adopted worldwide.

1. In our country, "the little guy" is conditioned to defer to corporations,
Edited on Fri Oct-20-06 08:38 AM by Crankie Avalon
Not only that, but we are actually conditioned to attack any other "little guy" who has snapped out of the corporate brainwashing and dares to attempt to put the health and welfare of real people over a corporate profit margin. If even a drastic cut in heart disease would result from adopting a new law that would make corporations use healthier but slightly more expensive ingredients (say, cutting profits to a "mere" 59% rather than 60%), the corporations would fight it tooth and nail and plenty of brainwashed fools would support the corporation over their own interests.

Of course, even if the law were adopted, the corporations would still extract their full pound of flesh-profit--they would simply pass the "added expense" of making their crappy products a little more fit for human consumption onto the consumers (you know, us).

3. An argument I don't know how to counter --
If you tax corporations they will simply pass on that expense to the consumer so why tax them?

???

5. I guess in a case like this, because it might mean we would at least...
...get a product that is less harmful to our health. Maybe. Of course, we shouldn't have to pay a penny more to get a corporation to meet a standard it was its responsibility to meet in the first place (its like paying them extra to keep poison out of baby food or to remove lead weights from a parachute), but this is America.

2. I couldn't agree more!!
It is time to rein these behemoths in! They were created to serve us, not the other way around!

I first read about corporate personhood in a letter to the editor in my local paper. I had a better than average education & civics class was one of my favorite classes, yet I do not recall ever hearing or reading about corporate personhood prior to that letter.
For those who want to know more, here is an excellent primer on what it is, how it is contrary to what our founding fathers wanted, & how it threatens our democracy.

I'm going a little off track here, but if AI should come about, wouldn't corporations be a perfect place for it to reside? But then that leads one to wonder, would we be any worse off with AI as the decider than we currently are? ;)

4. Also - notice how the Republicans like "state's rights"

until those states (like California) start trying to regulate things like gas emissions - or things like warning people about mercury in fish.

If States were considered to be more their own entities - like Denmark - they would have the authority to try to protect their citizens.

I think it would be good if states had to have at least minimum regulations - but could have more.

At the very least - we have been getting warnings on things like paints and tape that will say that California considers this to contain carcinogens - whether the rest of you do or not.

(There have been laws passed recently that would make it harder or impossible to California and other states to do these things).
