U.S. invasion responsible deaths of over 250,000 civilians in Iraq
When does it end ? 400,000 ? 500,000 ?

by John Stokes

New studies make the Bush administration's "liberation" argument for a 'pre-emptive' war against Iraq seem questionable.

The invasion of Iraq in March 2003 by U.S.-led coalition forces has been responsible for the death of at least 150,000 civilians (not including certain of Iraq), reveals a compilitation of scientific studies and corroborated eyewitness testimonies.

The majority of these deaths, which are in addition those normally expected from natural causes, illness and accidents, have been among women and children, documents a well-researched study, that had been released by The Lancet Medical Journal.

The report in the British journal is based on the work of teams from the Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University in the U.S., and the Al-Mustansiriya University in Baghdad. <more here>

Flowers, democracy, taking care of their oil fields...putting them back on the right monetary system (dollars)...and all the new pipelines and schools...And soon, no more terrorist!

Fundamentalism Forever!

4. The numbers are staggering
The truth is I cannot really comprehend 3000 deaths let alone the
30,000 President Bush has admitted.

I became a father late in life. The loss of a child seems to me to
be so devastating that I cannot imagine the depths of sorrow it
would cause. So I multiply that by 30,000 and now, this report says
multiply that by five....

I saw an interesting article by Noam Chomsky today on the website
Counter Point. It is hard to keep ones head straight. I tend to
think of even our opponents, the Republicans as Americans of good
will (not necessarily their leaders). But how we can stand up as
a nation with the bloody history we have created... I just don't know.

On top of that, you only have to look at what was done to Danny Pearl
or other brutal executions, videoed beheadings etc., and know that
our declared foes are grievous.

Those who would cut the head off of a young man who is doing nothing
but trying to help a wounded nation cannot be 'reasoned' with. But
how can you ignore the brutal facts of innocent deaths on the massive
scale we have caused.

Historically, I think it was moral error for the Allies to 'accept' and
adopt the idea that it was strategically appropriate to target civilian
populations in war. This has been cited by terror groups as their moral
precedent for what they do in the name of their political cause.

How to fix it? I do not know. I feel helpless. That this is beyond me.
