Groannnnnnnnnnn...Another missing blonde coed
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 12:48 AM by Horse with no Name
Time for another media circus.
They didn't find time to tell us about an oil spill in the Gulf, but what you want to bet they won't be able to shut up about Jennifer.
My preliminary money is on the boyfriend.

Authorities in Orlando, Fla., are searching for a University of Central Florida graduate who did not show up for work Tuesday after she said she was going to mail a package, according to a Local 6 News report.

Investigators said Jennifer Kesse, 24, did not show up for work at Westgate Resorts in Ocoee, Fla., Tuesday morning.

Family and friends are concerned because she can always be reached by phone or by her family. Kesse's family has tried to call her cell phone but calls are immediately sent to voice mail.

The last person to hear from her was her boyfriend but he does not know where she could have gone.

1. I know that its currently 'fashionable'
to belittle media attention to the missing person who is female and
blonde. However, I feel obliged to point out that making fun of this
is a bit unsensitive. The family and friends of this person are
likely to be in a state of desperation and shock. I hope we are not
at the point that we do not value concern over the loss of human life...
even that of a blonde young woman.

Pile on, please, media scum who sensationalize these cases..but I hope
we can differentiate those who feed on it from the real loss of
those who are experiencing what is really happening.

Hopefully she shows up ...healthy.

5. It is local news
Not national news.
Nobody wishes her harm and everyone hopes she comes home safely.
However, we have a Constitutional Crisis at hand that the media would rather not talk about and for some reason, when pretty blondes go missing, that is all we hear about 24/7.
Did you hear about the biggest oil spill in history in the Gulf today?
I didn't either.

Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 01:36 AM by Zinfandel
sympathetic, No? Cuz, it will go on and on and on and on and on, while ignoring & filtering the millions who are getting fucked by this same "sympathetic" whore media, shilling for the "change the story" Rove & administration...A young, white, blonde, (and I would assume) a Christian woman...Who was just teaching bible studies, dastardly fucks!!!

Where have I heard this shit before?

I'm sure you can recognize this...as the whore media distorts daily!!!!!

No?

Then, I would suggest & recommend... don't overlook Rove as the culprit!

8. So you think DU will attack the missing girl and her family?
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 01:04 AM by K-W
That is an odd concern.

Making fun of media decisions... actually, no one makes fun of it. We arent making fun of it, we are pointing out the problems with it. Regardless, its got nothing to do with her family, so what are you talking about? Saying that her story shouldnt dominate the national media does not in any way shape or form suggest that her life was not of value.

So you are concerned that DUrs might confuse the media with a family...

Of course hopefully she shows up healthy, but there is alot of injustice in this world, and the whole country doesnt have to hear about and emote every single time a upper/middle class white girl goes missing (or anytime any girl goes missing really).

13. I think my response is prompted by the title of the post
.."GRRRRROOANNN another missing blonde coed"

Thanks for responding to my post and making good points. I think, in
my defense I would say that the tone of the post seemed callous to
what the story represents...in reality...rather than a critique of
the media. (I haven't yet seen a media frenzy over this story).

I hope my concern for being sensitive to what the facts mean to
the family really isn't odd.

I am not "attacking" DU. I hope you see, in my post, my own disgust
with media sensationlizing of such stories. If not, I assure you that
I share, along with the other posters, that disgust. But I do not think
it does us credit to refer to this missing human as "another blonde
coed".

Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 01:33 AM by Zinfandel
It will work...So how many missing black co-ed stories have you been concerned with, (or even heard about)...Do you see the bullshit and why many here are very skeptical and perhaps, see right through it...

Again, I think it was Karl Rove who snatched her...dastardly fuck!!!

16. It wasn't callous
It just a well known reminder to folks here that now all media attention will shift from national news of importance and focus on this which is tragic no doubt, but still it is local news.
There are certain things that are indigenous to DU.
This is one of them.
Welcome.

19. This is local
You are the one posting this in a national forum.
All due respect..I haven't seen this on any national outlets.

Maybe it will become a rita cosby special or Greta will get
excited. But It is you who posted the 'local6' web link.

as to the other poster questioning my 'concern' over non whites...I
guess I am simply not going to respond to that.

25. Yes I found this in the local paper
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 01:46 AM by Horse with no Name
However, past experience is that they will take it and run.
I think the best example that I can give is that during the Natalee Hollaway ordeal, there was ALSO a beautiful black woman who had a small child that was also missing. There was ZERO coverage of this woman and she was every bit as beautiful as Natalee--just black.
There was non-stop Natalee coverage on every news outlet.
Seems someone could have spared a few minutes for this lady.
Trust me when I say that DU'ers notice prejudice and racism where it exists, and it definitely exists in this context.
Why is it that some missing people go into pop culture and some go completely unnoticed?
It is ALWAYS an issue of wealth and privilege.
Have you ever heard of Christine Lott?
http://www.kvpress.com/news/articles05/0505lott.htm
Why wouldn't her story be just as important? She has three children.
Is it perhaps because they are poor?
Indeed it is.

17. The title doesnt justify your implications.
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 01:30 AM by K-W
The poster was very OBVIOUSLY groaning about the prospects of this story becoming overcovered nationally, which should have been even more obvious to someone who also feels that way.

I dont know whether you are attacking DU or not, but I am informing you that people on DU are not monsters and you dont have to be concerned that they might be monsters. There are few places with as many good ethical people as DU and human life is one of the paramount concerns of DUrs.

Nobody is going after the girl or her family. who will not be reading this thread anyway (making it a bit odd indeed that you bring them up)

21. I think you are right
my post hit the pedal too hard... I am a lawyer and
deal with victims of crime a lot and probably too sensitive to
the issue. My bad. I felt the tone of the post was callous. But,
I agree, the thrust was to challenge the idea of the media making
a local story a 'national event'. sorry.

27. media to blame either way...
I completely agree with you. We need to make sure that we don't belittle the feelings of the family by saying, "Oh, another one. Big whoop."

But, personally, I'd blame any such thoughts on the media itself.

I hope this doesn't sounds like a tasteless analogy, but it's like when the radio stations will play a great song over and over and over again to the point that you hate the song. I can no longer stand to hear "When September Ends" because it's been overplayed so much (another great example from wayback is "Don't Speak"). When I hear that first arpeggio I change the station, thinking "Oh, God, no...." It's a nice song, and I don't mean any disrespect to Green Day for cringing at hearing it, but the radio stations have beaten me over the head with it that I can't help it.

Likewise, I completely sympathize with the families of these missing girls, but it keeps getting played over and over again, and I can't help but respond with "I don't care!" They're serious cases, but the TV stations have taken all meaning out of them.

In fact, I think it could be argued that the TV stations are in a way showing the families and the missing/murdered girl the greatest disrespect by actually publicizing the story nationally. When it remains local, it's a story that has meaning: there could be a killer walking our streets! The girl you sat next to in math class is missing! When it's "nationalized," it just becomes "oh, another white girl's gone missing," and it's just a way for people in the media to garner ratings and feign caring, but once that story's done, they find another girl to glom onto. They don't care whether a girl's found live or dead--though a dead girl promises the prospect of a trial--and the longer a girl's missing, the happier they are.

So, no matter how much someone seems to disrespect a missing girl or her family by making tasteless comments or saying "I don't care," it could never rise to the level of disrespect the media shows the girls and their families by using them as nothing more than props to find ratings. And, because they present the cases in an exploitative manner, they are to blame as well for the lack of concern this engenders in members of their audience.

So there is always one missing or just killed. The media doesnt want for lack of things to overcover at the expense of real news. Whenever distraction is needed, they find a sensational story to cover.

a 24/7 schedule and the impeachment word has actually been circulating this past week. Bigtime Diversion is therefore required. The recent resurrection of Osama isn't surprising either.
