Human species 'may split in two'
This sounds like a division between D's and R's.

No wonder rePUKES hate evolution. They don't want to be permanent members of the Dimwitted Squat underclass. They should be happy liberals look out for lesser animals.

The Democratic class will be smarter, healthier and creative. RePUKE class predicted to be ugly, unhealthy and deny global warming and evolution.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6057734.stm

Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics expects a genetic upper class and a dim-witted underclass to emerge.

The human race would peak in the year 3000, he said - before a decline due to dependence on technology.

People would become choosier about their sexual partners, causing humanity to divide into sub-species, he added.

The descendants of the genetic upper class would be tall, slim, healthy, attractive, intelligent, and creative and a far cry from the "underclass" humans who would have evolved into dim-witted, ugly, squat goblin-like creatures.

1. And brilliant refutation of that nonsense
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=2422107

People have been spouting this sort of idiocy since before Darwin and Mendel. It's the reason the English used to transport members of "the criminal class" to places like Botany Bay -- to rid the species of the defective types. It's fun to speculate that R's are genetically inferior, but it's pseudoscience.

With plastic surgery, almost anyone can be good looking, but they'll still pass on the same genetics they were born with. This is idiotic.

16. Exactly - It seems as though it would set a precedent for
slavery and degradation of the "inferior class", just like during the golden days of the British Empire. It was how they justified the abuses - Indians & Africans were a "substandard" species and therefore it wasn't necessary to treat them as human beings.

Personally, I think the London School of Economics would want to distance themselves as much as possible from this crackpot and his "theory", or maybe this notion is another reactionary step back to the days of the Nobility and the serfs.

And one of the most important books of two centuries (written in the 20th and revised in the 21st). You would not believe how sloppy and bogus this sort of "science" is.

And it's a movie most of us haven't had the chance to see, and won't until (unless!) it comes out on DVD. Thanks to survivor999 for the headsup on this:

Has anyone seen it? Does anyone have any information? I heard a great review this morning on NPR.

13. What an ioptimist! By the year 3000 we could be extinct
as a species. 1000 years from now? Come on, what a foolish prediction to make. We can't even predict the weather, this year was supposed to be an active hurricane season for the East Coast. It's been a sleeper so far.

It's pretty dumb to make predictions that far in advance. A lot of other problems we will have to face, even if true, this will make his theory insignificant in comparison to global warming, nuclear proliferation, dying oceans, unpredicatable weather patterns, ect.

14. Jimmy Neutron's theory of evolution...
In this animated character's debut movie, Jimmy and schoolmates travel to a distant planet to find an 'advanced alien civilization' with a state of technology far beyond ours. Unfortunately, their technology reduced them to aemobic blobs living 24-7 entirely in their cars. Their mobility devices (their cars) were egg-shaped, flew without noise and exhaust emissions, had mechanical arms and a voice box.

The race was technologically superior, but had devolved physically and morally too. Isolated from each other, without sense of touch, they became obliviously indifferent and cruel, extreme individualism. Their religion was a mass celebration of a giant "3-eyed" chicken, their GOD, who upon hatching was fed human sacrifice. Weird but true. :-0

Me and Oliver will have a beer and argue over it...there are more than two classes of people so there will be more than two "sub-species" as Ollie predicts.

Some one defrost me in 3000AD and let me know which of us was right...

...this theory is also contradictory if I'm reading it correctly. On the one hand he expects life expectancy to extend to 120 years, but on the other hand he states:

There could also be health problems caused by reliance on medicine, resulting in weak immune systems. Preventing deaths would also help to preserve the genetic defects that cause cancer.

Doesn't sound like a recipe for a 120 year life expectancy to me.

27. Leave it up to a Brit to imagine a class society, this time
formed by genes, instead of birthright.

There are so many holes in his argument to refute that I don't know where to start.

For one think a standing prick doesn't discriminate so mating will be at random a lot of times, like it is today, causing genes to be spread equally among the population.

Also, breeding within a limited group seems to cause more birth defects and mutations instead of breeding a superior race.

Just my humble opinion.

Oh, never mind.

He's got it backward. In another thousand years, not only will there be only one species of human, there will be only one identifiable ethnicity. It's already started. I married outside my ethnic group - a *lot* of people I know have, and for the next generation, the proportion will be even higher. I think it was a lot rarer in my parents generation, and a couple of hundred years ago (an instant in evolutionary terms) much, much rarer.

In addition, many of the genetically isolated groups that might have begun to diverge are being integrated into larger populations (with the unfortunate loss of cultural and linguistic diversity). I heard a sad factoid the other day (don't remember where) - the claim was that more human beings can now understand Klingon than Navajo.
