Japanese entertainment group says videos posted without permission

Updated: 2 hours, 11 minutes ago

TOKYO - The popular video-sharing site YouTube deleted nearly 30,000 files after a Japanese entertainment group complained of copyright infringement.

The Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, found 29,549 video clips such as television shows, music videos and movies posted on YouTube's site without permission, an official from the group, Fumiyuki Asakura, said Friday.

The San Mateo, Calif.-based company quickly complied with the request to remove the copyright materials, made on behalf of 23 Japanese TV stations and entertainment companies, Asakura said.

Most videos posted on YouTube are homemade, but the site also features scores of copyright material posted by individual users. YouTube's policy is to remove such clips after it receives complaints, though some have suggested the startup eventually could be sued, especially with deep-pocketed Google Inc. about to buy it for $1.65 billion in stock.

1. Good for them...

I love the idea of YouTube -- everyone sharing their own videos -- but, being a writer, I'm also a big fan of intellectual property.

On edit: That said, I should point out that I consider small clips of TV shows to certainly be within the bounds of "fair use." :hi:

2. I can't see how Google has bought anything but a HEADACHE.
One of the reasons YouTube wasn't getting sued
for millions of dollars every day was...everyone knew
they didn't have millions of dollars.

Now that they belong to Google, watch the copyright lawyers start
swarming all over them.

And once all copyrighted material is gone from YouTube, just
exactly WHAT is gonna be left to attract large numbers of
viewers?

5. Why, endless videos of skateboarders falling down, cats sleeping
and babies farting. If that isn't entertainment, I'd like to know what is!

13. Google ads.
"And once all copyrighted material is gone from YouTube, just exactly WHAT is gonna be left to attract large numbers of viewers?"

Granted, that's an over-simplification in response to your question, but Google basically wanted the phenomenally popular YouTube as a placeholder for Google Ads. The same ads that can be completely obliterated with a couple of clicks in Firefox. Those ads.

Outside of the copyrighted material, I have no interest in YouTube. The whole "MySpace" element, the "America's Funniest Home Videos" thing, is lost on me. When the day comes in which they are the only items left on YouTube, I'll consider it an army of wankers drowning in a sea of Google Ads.

18. If that's what they're thinking, then they didn't really think it through.
Unless their real goal was to follow the Gates Philosophy™,
by buying up the competition until there's nothing left to
watch on the web except GoogleVideo?

20. They have side deals with some major music and movie and TV cos
It's basically free publicity, there are no full-length movies or shows, so essentially it's a promotional vehicle, sort of what the old Trailer Network was supposed to be. It will run into some troubles, but not a lot, I bet. It will work on the MTV model, eventually. People will be DYING to get their video stuff on there, as long as it's under 10 minutes.

If not, Google loses a bet with two quarters' profits at stake.

4. Be ready for more
Google video is mostly devoid of any the TV or movie clips that are all over YouTube. Google tries to sell copywrited material among other things.

This acquisition will only push YouTube more in that direction.

14. Absolutely correct on both counts.
YouTube will almost certainly become "The New & Improved Napster." And the same threats that killed Napster will kill the copyrighted content on YouTube.

16. In many instances copyright laws go too far. I think some
things need to change. In the first place when a show like Jon Stewart's goes out nation and even world wide to begin with, why is putting up five minutes of some of his better moments on Youtube for everyone to see, who missed it, so horrible?

17. It's really up to the producer
Plenty of bands allow live taping and transmission of their music. See archive.org. Jon Stewart seems like a progressive type of guy that could get into that type of homegrown viral marketing. Comedy Central, on the other hand, may not appreciate the idea, especially if they are looking to publish a "Daily Show Greatest" DVD or something like that.

So lets go to every Michael Moore video on YouTube and flag it as hate speech. Two can play that game.

Just what I was thinking! Every speech by every liberal I can find will be labeled "Hate Speech". Even money they'll suspend accounts if they label too many liberal videos as such.

I just flagged the Keith video (the first one) as inappropriate...since they now have a HATE SPEECH category...I'm going back to the others now.
