It's got to be bin Laden. That's why the Repiglicans are spending millions on an ad campaign that appears to be highlighting their incompetence in fighting the war on terror. They've got Osama in a cold drawer in Langley, and they're waiting for the week before the election to do a Rose Garden photo op with his desiccated corpse. I'll bet you my lunch money. Any takers?

I have to concede it's possible. I don't know that they would do it that way exactly though - I would think they'd want to tell a heroic story - picking him up in some daring raid in Pakistan or Afghanistan. That sort of thing.

Karl would want a show, a really big show. Something like the toppling of the Saddam statue or the "rescue" of Jessica Lynch. But I don't think they have him nor do I think they're apt to get him.

I've never seen such a miserable pile of advertising attacking local Dems. Darcy Burner (WA 8th Dist) is a perfect example. I have been innundated by both mailers, radio ads and television. A small forest of trees must have been destroyed to cover the mailers that come to my mailbox alone...

If the Republicans had Osama, they'd better trot him out now to stop their freefall. Maybe they'd win a few tight races and keep a slim majority in both houses of Congress.

If they have Osama and wait until within the week before November 7, I think the majority of the public will cry foul and say that the Republicans are electioneering the war. In short, this political theatre will backfire on the Republicans.

My take on things: if the October Surprise doesn't involve Bush bombing the Iranian Oil Bourse on Kish Island (as part of a response to a Gulf of Tonkin-like reason to attack Iran), there will be no October Surprise. Everyone's expecting the October Surprise. The question is, are the Republicans crazy enough to bloody up the ballot box in hopes of winning?

OBL won't be enough to regain "Reagan Democrats" and Indepedents. It would just be too late at this point. It may cement their 30% base, but really would gain nothing else. I think they're gonna take a real beating or absolutely try to steal it. Greg Palast is right. We have to MAKE them steal it.
