Just saw "This Divided State" it is wonderful |
|
it's the story of Utah Valley State College's getting Michael Moore to speak on it's campus. It will break your heart, that there are so many closed minded people in our country.
Also, note the difference between Hannity's speach and Moore's. Is it me or is Hannity just plain mean? Moore was inclusive, Hannity was exclusive...making fun on individuals in the audience who said they were liberal.
What a sad, sorry state our country is in that this is what passes as public discourse.
It was nice to see the kids stand up for what free speech...but the college lost $200,000 in donations as a result of Moore's speech. I wish the movie had ended with a plug "the college lost money so the makers of this movie request that you make a donation to the school in honor of free speech to off set its loss."
Anyway, the movie said the student body Vice President, Joe Vogel, has written a book about his experiences. I thought I saw something posted here about a place to buy advance copies but I can't find it via google. Anyone have the link?

2. Because of this, I believe civil war will come one day once again |
|
The different parts of the country are simply growing further and further apart on cultural if not political grounds. Living in rural Mississippi is totally different from living in urban L.A. The attitudes are completely different. The views and opinions of people from gay marriage to abortion to issues of privacy are simply so disparate.
There used to be a time where differing opinions were tolerated if not respected. Those days are rapidly disappearing.

4. while I think we are a long way from civil war. . . |

I disagree with your nostalgia for tolerating, if not respecting, differing opinions. I can't tolerate those who would not allow Moore to speak. Or who would deprive gays of their civil liberties.
Maybe it is just my brand of intolerance which brought about the civil war.

5. I'm probably dreaming of a past that never existed |
|
Ultimately, I guess I'm blinding myself by saying that there were days when differing opinions were tolerated. In actuality, it's probably closer to the truth that there has always been a struggle with intolerance in this country whether it be prejudice of ideas or prejudice of religion, skin color, and so on.
Of course, I would say muzzling one's ability to speak because one disagrees with that person is intolerant if not a form of repression.
However, I just think that we're no longer "one nation," and I'm not sure we really were one nation at more than a few brief points in US history.
