13. Lots of things.
According to Wikipedia, " Among his legislative causes are asbestos regulation and environmental protection, particularly the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge." Also "He has also been noted for his work, along with Senators Patrick Leahy and Charles Schumer, in blocking conservative judicial nominations". He is currently serving as the Democratic Whip about which they say

"During his time as the minority whip, he has been noted for his sharp debating skills. Durbin has also been noted for his effectiveness at framing and articulating the Democrats' message, and many have said that he is an effective whip both because of his strategic skills and because he has assiduously avoided any talk of higher aspirations."

He also has a 0% rating from the Christian Coalition, which can only be a good thing. He was also listed by TIME as one of the 10 best Senators.

17. Surely he's done SOMETHING since George Allen (R-Idiot) stole
Durbin's legislation on the Senate floor and called it his own....

19. Obama backed LIEberman in the primary
and Joe was his "mentor" when he entered the Senate - I'm thinking that voted the same as LIEberman 100% of the time isn't true -

and I am not a big fan of Obama or Clinton....

I read an article from Yahoo news a while back called Mr. Obama goes to Washington and there were several things in that article that concerned me about Senator Obama - unfortunately the link is no longer active and I didn't keep a copy.

a few post earlier someone said that Obama had voted with LIEberman 100% of the time and in my post I said I doubted it was true and it isn't 100% because LIEberman voted to confirm Roberts and Obama didn't and there might be others but I haven't done a complete comparison - but looking at their voting records they appear to be pretty darn close..... http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/

Obama did support LIEberman in the primary as did Clinton as did Boxer - and I didn't like that any of them endorsed him - I think in a primary the leaders in the party should stay the hell out of it and let the voters decide. You know like Russ Feingold - who stayed out of it as I believe did Al Gore....actually I think that is the norm for most politicians - because you hedge your bets that way.....

on edit: found the article Mr. Obama Goes to Washington - not Yahoo news - The Nation David Sirota

15. It's standard to back incumbancy
Congress is an institution with it's own etiquette. It is rare for them to break with those entrenched standards.

16. I'm with you
He excites young people and uses a dialogue that is accessible across cultures.
Middle America gets him.
I know someone who flies the confederate flag who said they could vote for him because they got his speech at the convention. That says a lot to me about his potential appeal in the South.
I think LA would respond to his optimism.
