much of Rome when he was America's ambassador to The Vatican. Yes, The Vatican (the Pope, the Holy See) is a sovereign nation with its
own government. We have an ambassador there, as they do here. In any event, Flynn was well known for all the barrooms in Rome and throughout Boston. Allegations fly about Flynn's drinking problems.
He's an ultra (and I do mean ultra) conservative Roman Catholic. Anti-choice, anti-stem cell research, anti-right to die with dignity (Terri Schiavo stuff), no condom use even if AIDS is an issue, no public school sex education, no contraceptives whatsoever, a homophobe, anti-same sex marriage, anti-same sex civil unions, anti-same sex partnership for healthcare benefits, anti-gay everything, and on and on and on. Flynn is marching to the tune of Rome, period. He never waivers from it.
Here's ex-ambassador-to-Rome Ray Flynn (right in photo) marching in San Francisco on April 3, 2004,
in an anti-same sex marriage march "Support the Federal (anti-gay) Marriage Amendment,"
together with some Roman Catholic clerics ____________________________
edited to add: BTW "Catholics for the Common Good" is an organization that attempts to place their rightwing ultra-conservative Roman Catholic religious beliefs into our laws. Similar as does Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson and other off-the-wall medieval clerics who now have their own guy, George Walker Bush, in the Oval Office. This is why they are in lock-step together pushing the fourth ultra-conservative Roman Catholic (Samuel Alito) onto the U.S. Supreme Court:
Roberts, Alito, Scalia, Thomas = who cannot or will not separate their religious beliefs from law (except the death penalty) .
