HARTFORD, Conn. --Several noteworthy members of the Republican White House's donor network are among the newest contributors to longtime Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, according to campaign finance reports. Lieberman, who is running as an independent for a fourth term, has received donations from several powerful GOP members since losing the Democratic party primary in August to Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, The Hartford Courant reported Saturday.
Among them are Joseph Allbaugh, one of President Bush's four closest political confidantes during his 2000 presidential campaign; and two Republican Senate committee chairman.Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate, has collected a total of $5.1 million since beginning his independent run, according to the most recent campaign finance reports. While much of that money has come from loyal Democrats and Washington-based groups, several donors are prominent in Republican circles.
They include longtime Bush family friend and former ambassador Melvin Sembler, former assistant Republican Senate leader Don Nickles, and the heads of several Texas-based corporations. Republican Party strategist Scott Reed told the Courant that many Republicans interpreted White House adviser Karl Rove's pre-primary phone call to Lieberman as a subtle signal that they could help Lieberman if they wished.
