Blue dog, green dog, yellow dog
I like the sound of "blue dog Democrat", "green dog Democrat", and "yellow dog Democrat"; but I'm trying to figure which color describes what kind of Democrat. What's the origin of the "dogs"?

4. I don't know any but yellow...
The phrase "yellow-dog Democrat" was used to describe
southern strict-party-line voters.
The saying was that "they'd vote for a yellow dog
if it had a D after it on the ballot".

I dunno nuthin' bout the other dogs you mentioned.

7. This is just off the top of my head,
as best I can remember, so I could be wrong.

Yellow dog Democrat came first, and that's all Dem, all the way. The quote that spawned the moniker was "I'd vote for a yellow dog before I'd vote for a Republican." It's an old, old term, back from the Civil War/Reconstruction days when the Republicans were the radicals, but it's stayed with the party while everything else has changed.

Blue dog = conservative Dem/Reagan Dem. I'm not sure where the color association comes from.

Green dog...I have never heard of before. Environmental/pro-alternative energy, maybe?

14. Green dogs are a cross between yellow and blue dogs
A green-dog Democrat is a cross between a yellow-dog Democrat and a blue-dog Democrat -- a moderately progressive, thinking Democrat who is liberal on some issues, moderate on some, a little conservative on some, ambivalent on some.

***
As a thinking American, The Green-Dog Democrat has real, serious problems with the neo-John Birchers, neo-Gilded Agers, neo-Robber Barons, and new-world-order ideologues who occupy the White House and much of Congress as heirs to the Newt Gingrich revolution. He is absolutely certain that George W. Bush is not one IQ point smarter than he was before September 11, 2001.

15. Well, it's like this...
Yellow Dog: Feed 'em whatever's on sale. Pat 'em on the head. You're good.

Blue Dog: Mix a little canned food in with the dry stuff.. Smile. Put it in a nice bowl (with their name on it). You're good.

Green Dog: People food only. Organic. Variety. Serve it on time. No bullshit. Watch the teeth, they're sharp.

19. What they said above
but I always thought a Green Dog Dem meant the enviro/green wing of the party - but I could be wrong.

Yellow Dogs vote a straight Dem ticket. Yellow Dogs always vote straight Dem even if it would mean voting for Zell Miller and Cynthia McKinney at the same time. Yellow Dogs always vote straight Dem even if the candidate is Old Yeller.

Blue Dogs are southern Dems, Reagan Dems, rural Dems, fiscally conservative Dems, etc. The House has a Blue Dog Democrats caucus. The name came about from the office where they used to meet - had drawings of a blue dog on the walls by a Louisiana artist.
