Geologist: Earth has lots and lots of oil
http://upi.com/NewsTrack/view.php?StoryID=20061020-044158-9693r

SPOKANE, Wash., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A University of Washington economic geologist says there is lots of crude oil left for human use.

Eric Cheney said Friday in a news release that changing economics, technological advances and efforts such as recycling and substitution make the world's mineral resources virtually infinite.

For instance, oil deposits unreachable 40 years ago can be tapped using improved technology, and oil once too costly to extract from tar sands, organic matter or coal is now worth manufacturing. Though some resources might be costlier now, they still are needed.

"The most common question I get is, 'When are we going to run out of oil?' The correct response is, 'Never,'" said Cheney. "It might be a heck of a lot more expensive than it is now, but there will always be some oil available at a price, perhaps $10 to $100 a gallon."

5. "Never" run out of oil?
Isn't that scientifically incorrect since it's obviously a finite resource. Is there some spring of oil that replenishes current deposits?

As far as synthetic oil, isn't a main ingredient of synthetc the "nataural" oil?

23. Yeah, really!
I hate coming across "message deleted" posts, and try desparately to figure out what the post might have said based on any replies. Let's leave this one up a while so we can all enjoy the lunacy and have a chance to take a shot.

28. There are theories that petroleum is actually produced
as an on going process under the Ocean.

Those theories are currently scorned by environmentalist and not very well received in the scientific community , but they are out there.

Personally, since the process of how petroleum under the earth is produced is not very well understood, I'm open to the idea that it can be an on going process.

But, I would not hedge my bets.

16. just another detractor from peak oil
for a differing opinion, Mike Ruppert, a well-known proponent of Peak Oil, recently had this to say (from his new location in Venezuela):

"...a world consuming between 84 and 85 million barrels per day and where annual depletion is between five and six million barrels per day, per year and accelerating. Global depletion is only going to get worse and may fall off a cliff; especially when and if Saudi fields start collapsing from overproduction like Kuwait’s Burgan field did last year. Mexico’s super-giant Cantarell, the world’s second largest field is also in steep decline. The North Sea is in decline. Norway is in decline even as CNN runs specials about how Norway is investing its oil wealth for use after the oil runs out. Russia is in decline. Saudi Arabia has almost certainly entered decline, although the Saudi government will engage in any possible (sometimes ludicrous) deception to hide this fact."

21. No. We Will Not Run Out Of Oil
We will simply run out of the energy needed to extract this oil that is marginal to negative in energy yield. (Actually, we will quit throwing energy at marginal fossil fuels and use it in a more efficient manner, the exergy concept http://www.energybulletin.net/18195.html ).

'Economic' Geologist is the tell. Economists, for some reason, think money->energy.

30. "never" is "correct" but also facile
we will "never" run out of oil just because there will always be some tiny amount of oil that's way too inaccessible to get to. big deal. when people talk about "running out of oil", they do NOT mean "when will we use up the very last drop on the planet".

rather, they mean, something like, "when will oil get sufficiently rare and expensive that ordinary people will not be able to afford it, or to rely on the technology that depends on it."

saying that there will always be oil somewhere but it will cost $100/gallon is just being facile.
