Angst and despair seem to be really popular around here these days. I don't do angst very well. Stupidity? Despair? Well . . .

only via the reflection of our so called media, yeah, but it's because the pigmedia is, in effect 'managing' the perceptions of the populace, even regards its own power - god knows how good they are at it, god knows how easy it is/always was, esp if their budget is limited only by the capacity to lie. Your essay was very well done, and an encouragement in the battle against the goofs should strike a cord, but...the very despair, apathy or disinterest of the people is the very result of what's been going on for a long time, and recognised as a danger since.....well, in 'babbitt' by sinclair lewis, published in 1920 something, there's an afterword by mark schorer in the 1960 edition in which schorer says of what lewis was saying that IF the usa ruling elite ever lost control of the ignorant babbitt type hypocrites who they use to maintain and cement their power, then they and the nation would suffer a 'calamity'.... in the 1960 edition, schorer asked if that had already happened! In 2000, it can be said that it really has happened (though, as you say, the elite are in fact the main actors in the bush-is-god, worship-him-or-die movement (to paraphrase)
personally, i hate our societies, their mindless selfish greed and viciousness, so to see the damn things reduce themselves to monstrosities has a bright side imo - the laws of nature will punish them (us) soon, very soon
