My most recent letter to the editor on the MCA

Hello all, I'm fairly new to DU, and wanted to post this LTTE I wrote over the weekend. It will be going out to the major New Hampshire papers tomorrow. Do you think it's over the top? If you like it, feel free to 'borrow' it or modify for your local papers:

The inspiration for the following comes from German Pastor Martin Niemöller, who penned a similar piece in 1940s Germany. Now that President Bush has signed the “Military Commissions (of war crimes, torture and denial of habeas corpus) Act of 2006”, and is de-facto dictator, how many years before the following befalls those who choose to exercise their right of free speech and dissent in America?

First they came for the Muslims, but because I am not a Muslim, I did not speak out. Then they came for the non-citizens, but because I am a citizen, I did not speak out. Then they came for the outspoken College professors and govt. whistleblowers, but because I am not one, I did not speak out. Then they came for the gays, but because I am not gay I did not speak out.

Then they came for the peace activists and those exposing the War on Terror for the Big Lie that it is. That’s when they got me, but by then it was too late, because only the far-right, their brainwashed followers and those too frightened to speak out remained.

Keep this in mind on election day.
