So remind me again what we got from the filibuster "compromise"
Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 09:33 AM by yankeedem
As I see it, we got

1. 2 Federalist Society Supreme Court "justices"
2. Janice Rogers Brown and several other wackos previously blocked
3. We preserve the filibuster (which we refuse to use)
4. The filibuster is preserved so that the Republicans (who aren't afraid to use it) will have it if the Democrats take the Senate.

I seem to remember being told that this was a great compromise, that we couldn't afford to lose the filibuster so that we could preserve the right to choose and other executive checks and balances.

Tell me why this was a good thing again? Tell us what we won?

edited to add checks and balances

1. Filibuster was lost
When we agreed to not use it...As I stated in another thread, the Dems have to make the Republican play their hand. Just make sure that the Republicans know there will be consequences if they choose to follow-through with their threats.

25. Yep
Until we get an official candidate to get behind instead of "kill bush" we won't be taken seriously.

6. it was an abdication, not a compromise.
or, if you prefer, a betrayal of the democratic party by its "moderate" members. At least, that's how I look at it.
A compromise means both parties get something or give up something in order to placate each other.
the "compromise" was completely unilateral.

7. We stopped a couple of particularly nasty appointments .
Which of course is better then nothing. The alternative was we stop no appointments.

Edited on Thu Jan-26-06 08:57 AM by DoYouEverWonder
that our elected officials in Congress, REPS and DEMS, do not give a shit about a single one of us. It's all about maintaining the status quo and keeping their butts firmly attached to their comfortable leather chairs in Congress.

9. It might work out alright in about 20 years or so

if the Democrats get back in power and they get another nominee in there, of course by then we might all be running around in robes and speaking in tongues.

10. What are you talking about? Why shoehorn an intra-dem dispute now?
You already have Alito confirmed because the senate refuses to attempt a filibuster. What does that have to do with the compromise?

Aren't there enough issues with Alito without bringing up an irrelevant past contention?

11. The Senate refuses to attempt a filibuster
Because the illustrious twelve refuse to vote against cloture.

Please follow more closely in the future.
I will of course be happier with the compromise if Reid attempts a filibuster.

17. That's just crap. Nobody has even mentioned the compromise.
I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be following more closely. Was it reality, or the desire to pick fights among democrats?

If you're careful reading has come up with a single dem citing to the compromise as the reason he won't filibuster, you might have a point. I can't even find twelve democrats who are refusing to vote against cloture, or for that matter, a cloture vote.

14. You are presuming that it's *over*. It's not over yet.
I admit, it looks bad, especially with Salazar saying he won't support a filibuster. But you list two SC Justices in your OP, as if that's already final.

Don't you remember that the Dems pulled off an amazing last-minute blocking of the Patriot Act, just a short time ago? Things look dark, but it isn't a done deal yet. Get on the phones. Fax the Senators. Do whatever you can to convince the Senators to filibuster. The rawstory article said that the reason they weren't considering a filibuster is that they hadn't really seen much opposition to Alito. We have a couple of days left. DO something to change the outcome! Fight your own discouragement; then fight Alito.

It ain't over 'til it's over...

and this is Reid rat-fing the Republicans so that they have no time to respond.
Am very pessimistic however.

20. I have to admit...
I'm in wing-and-a-prayer mode right now, but the way I'm seeing it, until I *know* we don't have a chance, those emails and call and FAXes are the thing that might make a difference. So there is nothing to lose (except time, of course).

We can still be the party that adheres to decorum and civility. That seems to be the most important thing to many people.

18. This is just like the "bipartisan" decision to do away with....
After the Republicans had done all the damage they could to Bill Clinton, they got together with Democrats to SHELVE the Independent Counsel Act. If we still had that act, we could be getting impeachment proceedings in place right now.

21. Several things
As this post makes clear, the deal saved Roe v Wade, preserved the ability to block lunatics from judicial appointments, and made Frist look bad to his base.

24. Roe v. Wade is as good as dead
when Alito hits the bench, the Dems refuse to block lunatics so who cares if they have the ability, and who cares if Frist looks bad if he gets everything he wants anyway?
