Because we believe that he will overturn a woman’s right to choose.
This one simple and succinct line is all the Democrats have to say in explaining why they will filibuster Alito. The majority of the country that supports a woman's right to choose will understand this and support the Dems when they filibuster. If they pound on this talking point over and over---we will errrr "clean the repukes clocks".

1. I keep having a disturbing thought
Overturning Roe v. Wade might be the best thing to happen to the Democratic party? Look what having it in place does for the wing-nut crowd. Gives them a rallying cry, raises them huge amounts of money.

2. And overturning will be a terrible inconvenience
for those same wingnuts who will find it difficult to get daughter an abortion so she won't have to go to church carrying her daddy's baby.

5. I agree
I have heard and read this before. The republicans want the issue of abortion to never be settled. At least those running for public office. It comes up in every vote and is meant to be divisive. It even divides people within the democratic party. You can't be pro-life? and be a democrat and run in a primary. It gives the republicans a chance to dictate the discussion and we as democrats play along with it.

4. Simpler than that. Just because they dont approve of him is enough.
The president nominates the senate approves. This should mean, as it did just previously in the clinton years, that you have to find a candidate that both the current president and the current senate can agree on.
The rules of the senate include the fillibuster so that it can take a supermajority to pass muster if 41 members feel that strongly about it.

They dont need to come up with a particular reason or excuse. Because they DO NOT CONSENT to him is enough.
