Bill Maher kicks a little neo-con ass.
With the logos of the Heritage Foundation and the Project for a New American Century in the background, Maher states that, "You can't call yourself a think tank if all your ideas are stupid." He also delivers a beautifully sardonic smackdown of William Kristol (who recently called for immediate military action against Iran), telling Kristol, "Hey, Nostradamus, why don't you sit this one out?)

1. Brilliant. Maher has seen the light. He worried me last year
when he was giving 'them' the benefit of the doubt, but no more. The gloves are off!

20. Yeah, Maher jumped on board last year after the "purple finger" elections
And was slow to come back to reality. We was right to be hopeful, but allowed his hopefulness to clould his judgement.

3. It was one helluva show
I particularly liked Barney Frank making a complete fool out of that WSJ hack. Beautifully, eloquently refuted every lie the guy was trying to pass off. In addition, the guy looked the whole time like he was going to have a stroke. He looked and acted so nervous it was obvious he was lying.

5. I've got an old Army buddy who's an expert interrogator.
He used to question POWs (legally, back when we still had a Constitution). He tells me that one of the best indicators of untruthfulness is excessive blinking. With that in mind, watch Bush the next time you hear him speak, and contrast his blink rate with your own.

32. I'm not referring to blinking caused by illness.
Hmmm... I thought that was fairly obvious, or do you believe Bush has Tourette's?

8. Barney Frank was brilliant, and if he wasn't on the show, it's
possible that Moore would have gotten away with his lies. There were times when Maher just didn't have the ammo (knowledge) to challenge Moore but Barney came through!

10. Yes Bill tried to call Barney off of Moore, but Barney was on that
fool like stink on doo-doo. Moore is one of the most sickening Pub mouthpieces out there and he NEVER gets slapped down anywhere on TV! I LOVED IT! Moore was a whipped puppy! Barney was GREAT!

Bill is afraid the pubs will ALL quit his show, if they get a dose of that kind of truthfulness.

27. I met him once, and he is TOUGH
Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 08:26 AM by Patiod
Was doing makeup for a PBS series featuring a bunch of political luminaries.

Rep Frank is one of these people who fill up a room - and the other participants seemed a little intimidated by him -- the way you might behave when the Police Chief walks into a party. And these were mostly folks ABOVE the rank of Congressperson...

(the only other surprise: Al Haig was disarmingly charming, and former CIA chief Wm Webster was a huge Gilbert & Sullivan fan)

19. Not sure he was WSJ... "John Fund", the advertised panelist...
... was replaced by the giggling Steve Moore, one of the founders of the 'Club for Growth' Right Wing tax "reform" shill organization.

Regardless, Moore had his ass handed to him by Barney Frank, throughout the panel discussion. Heck, poor Jason Alexander barely got a word in, between Moore's delusions and Barney's immediate corrections. Barney ruled the night.

6. The whole concept of think tanks
should be scrutinized. It is a great propaganda ploy to create a "think tank" stuffed with "experts" on a certain issue or area of study who are beholden to a certain ideological position and crank out studies to provide their rason d'etre.

When the need arises to propagate a certain viewpoint in the public arena you trot out the appropriate "expert" and let him or her hold forth against an "expert" of the opposite camp. The public is then imbued with the expert's opinions and voila, you have created the perameters of socially acceptable debate.

We seldom see these people being called for the shills that they are, so I applaud Mr. Maher.

of old...very dangerous to democracy and freedom of thought.

15. Probably because she lets him in the backdoor when he gets
lonely

As far as the show I haven't seen it yet but I have a friend who was kind of on the political fence, last night he told me he saw Real Time and had some questions. We discussed many things, from PNAC to Halliburton, to Iraq, Iran and North Korea. He is oficially off the fence. Not only is he off te fence but he's tearing it down behind him. My information (DU RULEZ!) may have sent him over the edge but it was Mahr that caused him to question his stance. Go Bill!

18. Well, he does let Christopher Hitchens in the front door...
...from time to time as well, with typical and predictable results:

1) Visibly intoxicated
2) Generally disrespectful
3) Has a tendency to be combative with the audience

Since that last time, I don't think Bill will be inviting him on again, he was getting extraordinarily pissed off.

29. K & R Thanks for posting!
I watched the show, and thought it was great (the ending especially). The RW guy was SO pitiful - I could only think of Stephen Colbert when he asked Bill if he thought we'd be better off with Saddam in power (or something like that). It's one of the twisted logic talking points Stephen Colbert always uses when someone is against the war.

Maher said "YES" and backed it up with a lot of reasons, but really that talking point is so old, and so pitiful. Barney Frank did kick his ass, but it looked like it was kind of easy. The guy was a blithering idiot. I think Barney kind of had fun with that one.

The think tank thing was great, too - I like when Maher takes the gloves off, because he says things that no one else can or will say, in a way that even uninformed people can understand.

30. Great Maher show - one of the best I've seen in a while
Barney Frank was excellent and quick to rebutt the right-wing silliness with facts. Unfortunately this is one of the last Real Time shows I'll get to watch as we are switching from Comcast to Verizon. We will get many more channels on Verizon that we actually might watch, like National Geographic and BBC America, in the basic package which are only available from Comcast on their digital, and expensive, package. However Comcast does give the basic HBO channel in their Basic Plus package while it is a premium package on Verizon. We've decided that we can live without HBO in exchange for BBC America, History International and National Geographic. I'll just have to rely on DU for my Maher fix.
