Support stem-cell amendment
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research in Kansas City.
We live in a time of great promise. Scientists are moving ever closer to understanding the causes of devastating diseases. With understanding comes the hope for cures.
Missouri is fortunate to have first-rate universities and research facilities, such as the Stowers Institute in Kansas City, to participate in the discoveries.
Since 2001, however, some politicians in the Missouri General Assembly have tried to impose their narrow views on scientists by outlawing a form of stem-cell research...
With Amendment 2, Missouri voters have an opportunity to look past distortions and outright falsehoods and create a safe climate for ethical, potentially lifesaving scientific work. It deserves overwhelming passage.

Opponents argue that Amendment 2 misleads voters. But it is they who have made assertions calculated to confuse. Citing a passage that protects institutions doing stem cell research from financial retaliation by legislators, they claim the amendment will require public financing of that work.
What some people think of when they hear the term "cloning" is genetic manipulation that results in the birth of a cloned animal — or could result in the birth of a human being. Opponents use it to refer both to such a birth and to a scientific technique called somatic cell nuclear transfer that may be used if embryonic stem cell treatments are developed. But the amendment expressly prohibits implanting a cloned human embryo for the purpose of creating a human being. Blurring those distinctions allows opponents to raise groundless fears.
Amendment 2 would allow Missouri scientists to remain in the race for cures to diseases from Parkinson's to diabetes. Legal, ethical research that could diminish human suffering and save lives is worth voting for.
